A few recent things . . . . .
Ruby enjoys yesterday's windy day on the prairie . . . an attempt at a slow shutter speed but trying to catch said dog standing still was a different challengell!!
Pete wanders the tall grass of his prairie home . . . .
Below, walking west of Longview on the weekend. The Highwood River, which flooded High River, is below. Highway 40 is closed at the Kananaskis sign.

My advice is to keep shooting. Eventually your eye will begin to see more visually interesting things - not just things to practice with.
I think the surfer would be better with the two guys on the left cropped out. Maybe the rock on the right as well. Horizon needs to be level on the surfer girl. Third one I like and has potential for sure.

Anyone here a Fuji x100 or similar? Looking to buy a x100s possibly, but tis a bit pricey. D800 is just too heavy to haul around when I'm just walking around town.

Yup, just keep shooting. You'll naturally learn how to use your camera and what kind of things you enjoy shooting and develop from there.

I'm using a Panasonic G1 (micro 4/3) camera. I've heard good things and seen some beautiful results from the Fuji cameras, but yes, they are spendy and the autofocus is supposedly on the slow side.
The micro 4/3 world is relatively light, compact, and inexpensive (as far as lenses go, the latest gen bodies are up in the same $1k price range).

Fuji X-PRO-1 gets decent reviews but it is a digital rangefinder camera (mirrorless), you know, right? Very different from a D800 or D800E, which are full-frame DSLRs. I have played with an idea of getting a lighter weight camera for traveling and tested X-PRO-1. You get good resolution but not too much flexibility because of the limited lens selection. In that case, why not buy a cheaper point'n'shoot? I settled buying a smaller DX-format DSLR instead (D5200). The funny thing is though, I still take D800E or D3X to travel, even though they are heavy and bulky.

For the first time ever, we decided to go see chuckwagon races and the concert at the Grandstand this year. What a great show it was! I feel pretty bad for missing it all these years. I took lots of shots of both events and had them split into two slideshows. It was pretty dark during the concert and I was shooting at an angle, so grain does show. But overall, I think the colours and the atmosphere is there. Here's one shot. The whole set can be seen by clicking on the link below (these are hi-res shots, they may take time to load).

Oh yeah, I'm fully aware. I make my living with the D800. But it's too heavy and cumbersome for every day use IMO. I like the idea of a digital rangefinder and the x100 gets good reviews. Fixed lens is a positive, not negative in my mind. Ideal focal length.
Can you recommend any nice point and shoots? Any I've ever used are just way too slow and manual control was slim to none. I'm not a big gear guy and barely know what's out there these days, aside from what I use on a daily basis.

...which is why I just can't make myself to like them. Plus too wide most of the time for any decent crop. What's your budget?

Maybe a 1000 bucks or so. I might be able to justify more since it would be a tax write off. Ricoh GR looks intriguing, but no viewfinder is lame.

The answer would have been so much easier if you'd just said "under $200"!
I can't justify the cost of any PaS cameras over $200 (unless we go to Leica M9 or M10, which is in a totally different league). If you are cool with spending $1,000 on a substitute/travel camera, I strongly recommend spending a little more and buying X-PRO-1. You can get it at around $1,500 with one lens (sometimes with two, if you're lucky). It is worth the money.

Cool, thanks dude. I'll have to swing by my local shop and give some of these a try in person.
