Monahan, Gaudreau dominant in Monday's scrimmage

http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?...id=DL|CGY|home

Quote:
It’s the duo that the Calgary Flames fans and management hope to see hit the Scotiabank Saddledome ice as soon as possible.

Down the middle, it’s Sean Monahan – the 2013 first round draft pick who’s projected to be a dominant centre.

On the wing, Johnny Gaudreau – the 2011 fourth rounder who’s hands and skating ability is as smooth as silk.

Fans were shown a slight taste of their abilities at the development camp scrimmage on Saturday, but were given the full review the second scrimmage on Monday when they combined for six points in a 5-3 Team Red win over Team Black.

“I know he’s a great player and I know he’s going to play for a while,” said Gaudreau, the Boston College forward who will head into his third season there as one of the favourites for the 2014 Hobey Baker Award.

“Hopefully I get to play with him someday, he makes me a better player.

“With him on the ice, he’s an extremely talented player and it makes it a lot easier.”

Gaudreau continued with the superlatives about Monahan, saying the group improved from their performance on Saturday.

“At practices, we’ve been clicking pretty well together, so it’s been a good fit for me to play with a good guy like that,” Gaudreau said.

Sounds like a Johnny T and Patrick Kane combo.

With the high level of smarts Gaudreau and Monahan are two guys that can play with anyone, they make their line mates better hockey players.

I am beyond excited for Monahan.

Same here just watching him he's amazing. Just so smart all around the ice he will be a sure fire NHL player with huge potential.

I never saw today's game but I thought his positioning was excellent in the first game but his offensive skills are lacking along with a weak shot.

But he totally makes up for that with his positioning and hockey IQ. I don't think he'll ever be a top 6 center but an excellent 3rd line center.

Don't know why some of you are down on Horak. I thought he was the best forward out there, hands down. He was obviously the guy with the most experience and it showed. I've said it before and I'll say it again, it would be a crime if he wasn't on the opening night roster this upcoming season.

Knight looked decent enough.

Granlund was good

Baertschi looked like hot garbage most of the game.

I don't see what most of you see in Jankowski. The guy has a LOOOOONNNNNGGG way to go if he's to ever play in the NHL.

Gaudreau and Monahan pairing was so dominant that it was almost unfair for the other team. Individually they are incredible players, but together, they are unstoppable. It was awesome to see.

You and I must have been watching different games. Monahan has a terrific shot and scored goals in both games.

The speed, skill, and hockey sense are all there for an NHLer.

The one thing that I think makes him look unimpressive at times is his "effortlessness". He does appear to always be floating around at times and not giving 110% but that may be due to his hockey IQ. Don't have to work as hard if you are always in a good position.

Still if he wants to be an NHLer he needs to show more drive, be more assertive, and learn how to use his size effectively.

Big leaps from him in the last year and I thought he was one of the best players for team black in the third period today.

After Gaudreau, Monahan, Granlund and Baertschi, Jankowski was undoubtedly the next best looking forward in this camp. He's where we should hope for him to be at 18 years old (keep in mind he was only 17 when drafted). I was impressed with him today. Definitely has a couple things to work on, namely maintaining focus with the puck and protecting a bit better, but he was dominant late in the scrimmage. I don't know what you're smoking if you don't see anything in this kid. He may not excite me quite like Gaudreau, but he plays a different game. And still has plenty of finesse despite his size. I still see top 6 C potential in him, no doubt. It just might take him a bit longer (21+) before cracking the lineup.

I love that Gaudreau uses an old-school Bauer helmet. So awesome.

Maybe that "effortlessness" is it. It's just every time I saw Monahan and Gaudreau completely dominate team Black, Jankowski would be on the ice against them looking like he was lost. It possibly could be because those two are that good together and Jankowski didn't have chemistry with any guys he was playing with. Who knows, but it did seem as though Monahan and Gaudreau were miles ahead of Jankowski in my opinion.

I will admit though, I didn't watch the third period, so things could have changed then.

I would agree. Jankowski finds open ice well but looks like he's gliding. He communicates well, you could hear him yelling to his teammates from the stands.

Yeah, I think you have Horak pegged pretty good here. Horak is a jack-of-all-trades master of none type of guy, to a tee. He isn't going to blow you away in any one aspect but he works hard and can grind it out and win battles. I really am hoping to see him and Reinhart next season on a supporting line.

That awkward moment when Sven walks right beside Harrison as Kristin is asking about the two. 1:23 into the video of Harrison's interview
