Self-responsibility has been declining for decades in the western world...but these kind of things are just ridiculous.

CHICAGO - I'd like to tell Michael Strauss something about
onion rings. Like most food, when onion rings are just
cooked - they are HOT. So, you might want to be careful when
you first bite into them. Well, Michael Strauss, the idiot
that he is, bit into an onion ring from White Castle two
years ago and apparently "scalding hot grease splattered out
and onto" his arm, "scalding and severely burning him." He
has now filed suit against White Castle, asking for over
$50,000 for the "severe and permanent injuries" he suffered
after ordering White Castle "onion rings that were in an
unreasonably dangerous and defective condition." This suit
comes almost 10 years after a jury awarded more than $2
million to a woman who sued McDonald's after scalding hot
coffee spilled in her lap. You know, I'm really sick of
these people who don't understand that food and coffee are
hot! Where is the common sense, folks?
Some people just need to be punched square in the nose once in a while.

You could bet a nickle that if the onion rings were cold, he'd whine and complain about that too...maybe suing for emotional damages while he's at it.

My wife likes to call this the typical American mindset....having lived for half her life in each country now. Problems are always someone else's fault.
I hate lawsuits like this...the number of frivolous lawsuits compared to legitimate ones is probably staggering. I think at this point it's mainly people trying to buy a lottery ticket rather than really suffering damages they don't believe they are responsible for.

On a related note....
....my risk management prof mentioned another similar case to this in the States. A gentleman bit into a hamburger, and the 'burning hot' patty scalded his bottom lip.
He sued the fast food company because he had physical damage to lip, and emotional damage for not being able to participate in 'conjugal bliss' with his wife. I believe he won.
As a result, the fast-food company has set processing times to let burgers 'cool'. This is a reason why your burger doesn't come faster (well, moreso than it already does).
People will take any reason to grab money from somebody else. Sick.

Maybe I'm crazy but I always thought you should use your best judgement before determining that food has cooled enough to eat it. I never commence shoving food in my yap before I inspect it somewhat. How much grease shot out of the onion ring anyways? A half teaspoon?

I'm going to sue the city because they dont have a good enough pestiscide control program, so I was bitten by a horsefly.
I am going to sue because that hurt.

Agreed, and if I do happen to engage in 'premature mastication' and burn myself as a result, I usually call myself a moron rather than looking on the back of the phone book for the nearest personal injury attorney.
