Damian Brunner..A fit for the Flames ?
I haven't seen another thread on this topic so I thought I would throw it out there as I'm sure it's on some of our minds, maybe not. Even before Brunner went to Detroit, I was hoping the Flames would get him. Now that he is available, I really hope we take a stab at him. I look at our squad and wonder where the scoring is going to come from. Brunner is a right scoring winger whom I'd love to see play with Backs and Sven. I don't think he would cost too much- maybe 3.5 on a 3 year ? This guy is highly skilled and would love to see Sven play with that kind of talent.

I'm leery of throwing money at a player who's only played 1 year, especially one who played with the Wings.

I would be very interested but we are so packed at wing and would like to see some guys get that ice time. I like the player but unless we move out a stemp, cammy or hudler I don't see room for him.

Cammy- Monahan- Hudler
Sven- Backlund- Brunner
GlenX- Stajan- Stemps
Galiardi- Knight- D.Jones
McGratton, Bouma
We do need to shed some wingers for sure. However, I would prefer to see Jackman gone, Jones gone, Horak on the farm for one more year.

Horak is ready now.
Good luck on trading Jones. I like the player but the contract is horrid.
Brunner's defence game is horrid. Rather have players that want to play a 200' game.

I meant Blair Jones. I'm just concerned about the skill level and where the goals are gonna come from. Cammy is skilled, Hudler is skilled, Glenny and Stemps will hopefully pot you a few... But who knows what to expect out of everyone else or how they will mesch~ I think there are a lot of high hopes. Not every single guy has to play a 200 ft game. You need scorers who can be taught how to backcheck too. Hartley had Brunner in Switzlerland no ?

I like Brunner. It might be tough to fit him. But I would rather bring on guys like Brunner and trade guys like Stempniak and Cammalleri to make room.
A) We get assets for the trades
B) They fit with the future better then the pending UFAs

First off, this is a full blown blow it up rebuild year. We are not really worried about fielding a cup contending team and we are not going to stress about how everyone is going to mesh.
I don't mind the idea of Brunner but he is not a replacement for B.Jones. B.Jones a 4th line guy and I would expect him to be in a rotation with Bouma, Jackman and McGratton. Speaking of the 4th line, the Flames did not trade for D.Jones to play on the 4th line. We will likely be deploying him as a top6 RW who can bring the big body to offset the little guys on the LW.
Its also a bit silly to rush Monahan onto your first line right out of the draft but then say that you think Horak should go develop his game in the AHL. If anything the opposite is true and Horak should be on the team with Monahan going back to the OHL for another season.
The punchline is that you have a roster that is trying to do too much with too little and adding Brunner to the mix just makes it more messy. If there is a plan to ship out some of our vets before the season starts then go look at Brunner. Otherwise I would skip on him and promote from within heavily over the next two seasons.

Tbh I thought on many occasions (of the wings games I managed to catch) that Brunner looked like the Wings' best forward.
I'm not concerned about the 1 season/rookie issue. It's a non-issue imo. A half-season was enough to tell me not only that he's good enough to be in the league but to be a productive scorer in it. Was definitely well groomed/seasoned before coming over to play.

Not to pick on you specifically, but I simply dont understand the desire of so many to get rid of Stempniak.
yeah he isnt a young guy anymore, but he isnt "old" either. The Flames are re-building true...but you still need solid character guys who have experience in what it takes to play in the NHL. He is a perfect example of this in that he was a bit of a longshot to even make the show. Not only did he make it, he is a contributor in all phases of the game. He is on a very reasonable contract and seems like a quiet leader on a team with a need for that.
Just my 2 cents.

I guess the talk that the Flames were shopping him at the draft (as well and Tangs and Sarich, both who have since moved) fuels some of this talk.
Does a lot of things well but nothing great. Movable contract and could be attractive for teams looking to send a bigger contract back while at the same time getting a serviceable player back. Good complementary player but that's about it.

I like what he would bring to the team, but honestly there just isn't room for him here, especially with some kids ready to make the jump very soon. I wouldn't sign him only because of our current situation. Otherwise, I would jump at the chance to get his natural goal scoring ability.

Sounds like he may be close to signing with the Devils. Kind of a bad source but it's out there.

Is this Brunner a big guy who can score and fight and protect our little guys? If so sign him up.
