If Gaudreau so chose, he could, with one flourish of pen to paper, take one of the left-wing slots on boss Bob Hartley’s starting-from-ground-zero club for the upcoming season.
Really? Isn't it a bit of a stretch to say Gaudreau would be playing for the Flames this season if he wanted? I'd say he need one or two more years before the Flames even consider bringing him up.

I could be wrong, but I thought that it was reported a while back that the Flames wanted to sign him and Gaudreau insisted that he stay at college one more year.

I really believe that Gaudreau will stay all 4 years at Boston College. He truly has talent, however, he is simply just damn too small still. I'm not saying that he is going to get insanely bigger, but bringing him up to the farm team could really kill his confidence if we start him up there too soon and he fails to put up points.
Regardless of how the team does on the ice, I think the Flames organization as a whole is a classy organization and players enjoy playing here. Therefore, I believe Gaudreau when he says he will play for us. Absolutely nothing wrong with finishing up your college education, especially when the odds are against you (ie size).
From the sounds of the Connie interview this morning the Flames are totally fine with him playing college this year but will start pressuring him more to sign next summer. I assume if he wins the Hobey Baker, and plays with his brother he will have accomplished his college goals and will be ready for pro
The Paranoia is strong when it comes to Gaudreau. I'm just going to enjoy these viewings of him while we can regardless of what the future holds. Talent like this doesn't come along everyday. I guarantee the Flames will do everything to keep him here and get him signed. He has a good head on his shoulders and I think the fact that the Flames took a chance on him and giving him this opportunity speaks louder to him than anything else.
Am I right in that once he decides to stick around for 4 years in college, there is absolutely no advantage to signing with Calgary vs anywhere else? Hard to see anything Calgary has done to inspire loyalty towards the Flames. The only reason to sign for the Flames next year would be just if he feels he owes us something for drafting him (whatever that's worth).

If he plays four years at Boston College the only card the Flames have over any other team is that at the end of Boston's season the flames can throw the ELC contract at him and play him in some late season games. In this scenario for playing a handful of games he burns one year (effectively getting him closer to that second contract) and gets a signing bonus and NHL money in March rather then August.

I love when writers don't fact check. Schultz never finished 4 years of school, he was only @ Wisconsin for 3 years, but was allowed to become a UFA if he left school a year early because he played 1 year in the BCHL after being drafted.
All things being equal if Gaudreau were to become a UFA ala Shultz and could pick his team to start his NHL career with, he would pick a team with a bunch of huge physical players and not a lot of small talented ones.
It would be far easier to start out playing on a line with Richards and Carter or Kopitar and Brown rather than Stajan and Hudler.
How comforting would it be to have at least one of Chara, Boyckuck, mcQuaid or Seidenberg on the ice for every shift.
If the Flames are still the smallest team in the league (or one of the smallest 5) this time next year if I were an agent I would advise Gaudreau to stay the extra year and pick a team that would afford him the best opportunity to have a long NHL career.

We have monahan and knight who are both big and jankowski who will potentially join the team the same year as gaudreau, if not the year after. The flames have some size in their system
It genuinely sounds as though Gaudreau really wants that one more year to finish his education and develop more with BC. I think it's a good idea for him too as excited I am to see him as anyone else, but he needs to get some more size as well and I don't want him to get murdered at the pro level either. He is a really good talent and obviously a smart kid so I don't think he should be rushed anyways. Feaster will get him signed when the time is right.
Johnny is probably odds-on to win the Hobey Baker this year. If BC redeems themselves after their disappointing tournament season last year & he wins the HB then I think he'll have nothing left to prove in the NCAA. He can finish his degree in summer school sessions etc if he signs after his junior year.
I would love to see what he has to offer in the pros.

This is the direction I'm leaning as well. He doesn't have to go back for his final year to earn that degree and it's tough to say no to $1,000,000. I know I couldn't. Especially if he does wind up winning the Hobey Baker and another national championship
