Not sure if this was brought up yet. On FlamesTv it says with the #22 overall pick the Montreal Canadiens select Emile Poirier. I knows he's French but that's a pretty big mistake.

Draft Pick

I've seen Shinkaruk play and I can guarantee the Flames will regret not taking him. The Canucks really stole the show on draft day.

The Flames weren't the only team to pass him up...

Just joined to say that?
Yes the Canucks really did steal the show! I guess their Gong Show wasn't getting enough attention on the big stage, so the made it even more of a train wreck by trading Schnieder.
Thank-you Gillis for the ongoing entertainment!

K if we're making these bold "eat crow" statements. I've seen Shinkaruk play and I can guarantee he doesn't make the NHL.

Actually you can't guarantee anything since nobody knows how well his game will transform into the NHL game.
And besides you're a Canuck fan so of course you think the Canucks stole the show.

Hunter?!?! Is that you!?!?
The Flames may end up regretting not drafting Shinkaruk from time to time. But in the big picture, No.
I also have seen him play alot. He is fast! He has decent hands and a decent shot. Does he go to the hard areas? No. Is he a perimeter player amongst boys, yes.
Lets see him play against men and see how far his speed gets him when he never drives the net.
He fits right in with the Nucks. Never goes to the dirty areas. Is gonna get man handled and whine about it. And then start to dive to draw penalties on guys who are simply bigger and stronger.
Best comparable- Mason Raymond. But I think Raymond has more grit than Shinkaruk ever will.
And the Flames wont regret it, we drafted the Anti-Shinkaruk. His name is Keegan Kanzig!

Are you suggesting Calgarys scouts didn't see him play?

Draft Pick

I haven't seen much of Poirer I'll admit so it might be a bit unfair for me to judge. We will see how it plays out. I'm not trying to troll it's just my opinion. I do like the Klimchuck pick but the Poirer one was a bit of a head scratcher for me.

There were a TON of people like you on draft day. But since then I think everyone has settled, accepted and gotten genuinely excited for Poirier. I'm sure Shinkaruk will do just fine in Vancouver but there's no way anyone can crap on the scouting department and Feaster for sticking to their guns. They stayed the course with their plan and I applaud them for that. They could have blown their whole strategy out the window and I think I would have been more upset at that.

Do you have some inside info as to what their plans were?
How do you Know that their plan did not consist of picking Mirco Mueller, Kerby Rychel, Anthony Mantha or Frederik Gauthier that just came off the board before the Flames pick.....
Maybe they panicked and said well that leaves us with the French kid meaning Fucale ( and not being sure if Fucale was French or Italian) and they got confused and picked Poirier instead.
We have no idea what the Flames plan was and if they stuck to it. My above scenario was all made up but it is as close to what we know about the Flames real plan we will get to find out before Feaster writes his memoirs in 20 years.
I have never heard a GM or organization step up after the draft and say that it was going too fast and we got mixed up with who was left and made the wrong pick.
As for sticking to a game plan .... nobody goes into a game planning to pull the goalie with a minute left..... however circumstances sometimes dictate that pulling the goalie does indeed become the best strategy for the situation.

Yer drawin at straws man. Listen to them when they speak. They said this was their plan, to stick to their list. They did that. I believe them. No debate needed.

i agree that they stuck with their game plan. If they were left scrambling on the clock, i would think we would have just seen them take the BPA based on the concensus scouting rankings. The fact that they went off the board a bit leads me to believe there was a explicit plan (right or wrong).

I feel bad for Poirier. He's probably going to be compared to Shinkaruk for the rest of his career, at least here in Calgary.
