Just got back from the afternoon session. Players that stood out to me were Agostino and Janko. Agostino has some amazing hockey sense and just seems a step ahead. Jankowski has really started to fill out and has the hands to go with his size. Kulak stood out on D for me, I like his stride kind of reminds me of Bouwmeester in some ways. Ortio seemed to start off a bit lazy but he made a few good saves, nothing compared to Berra though. Overheard Conroy stating that the only way to beat Berra was low glove or something like that and I heard Monohan was pretty much the only one to beat him. Wortherspoon looks like he as a lot of potential out there. Sven is well Sven he looks like he will be much better during games/scrimmages rather then just drills. I also liked Ferland his fitness and skating stood out to me especially when they were doing some drills near the end. Overall this has been a huge improvement over watching just Nystrom and Moss. Can't wait for some scrimmages!

So for those who went today we just need to know whether we book the Stanley Cup parade route for 2016 or should we wait until 2017 just to be safe?

14lbs heavier in one year for Janko is pretty damn impressive. Guy is putting his work in.

Afternoon crappy observations:
- A'gostino stuck out. Dude has amazing hockey sense, great body control, nice shot. I really want to see him do well all week, and again in the main camp. I was REALLY impressed.
- Both goalies were pretty lack luster. The morning crew with Gillies and Berra was MUCH better. Ortio was very dissapointing.
- Janko has been talked about a lot, but i am excited with the kid's progress. Not there yet, but looks like its coming together.
- I kept seeing #86 doing a lot...looked down to see the name 'Josh Jooris'. Not sure who this kid is, but I liked his game. He had a lot of hustle.
- Wotherspoon stuck out a couple times to me on the 3-on-2 drills. He looked good positionally.
- I noticed the coaches working with Kanzig a lot more during stoppages than other players. I think they realize he has the size, but his skills are RAW. He is a project, but as an 18 year old monster, I think there is potential.

To keep plying on the Janko love, he realistically looks like he could turn out to be second line centre.

Not bad for a skinny highschool kid.

Has Hanowski's skating improve at all? That was really his only glaring weakness last season, but hearing he lost weight over the summer gives me hope.

Very impressed by it. He has an NHL release. Really quick shot; on his stick and then off of it. Quite a bit of power behind it as well.

I didn't notice his speed, but his lateral movement was great. Very shifty and always seemed to win the battles for loose pucks.

Group A

91 - Acciari, Noel - C - Did not stand out

40 - Berra, Reto - G - Was pretty good. Certainly a better goalie in his first North American action than Henrik Karlsson. Fairly quick and doesn't give up on the play. Huge, covers most of the net when on his knees. Neither Berra or Gillies gave up a lot of goals.

75 - Carroll, Austin - RW - Didn't notice him

67 - Culkin, Ryan - LD - Didn't notice him

95 - DeBlouw, Matt - C - Didn't notice him

79 - Ferland, Michael - LW - Good effort, definitely has potential, even if only on the 3rd/4th line.

60 - Gaudreau, Johnny - LW - If he makes the NHL, he'll be in the same conversation as Briere. All that remains to be determined is if he can adapt to the pro game.

82 - Gillies, Jon - G - Awesome goalie for a 19 year old. He'll be an NHL goalie if he remains as is. He'll be a star if he continues to progress.

83 - Gilmour, John - LD - Did not notice

58 - Hanowski, Ben - RW - Good effort, his skating looked better and less awkward. Could compete for a 3rd/4th line role this season.

97 - Harrison, Tim - RW - Laid a big hit on someone. His rep as a banger is well founded.

70 - Hoffman, Brody - G - In my opinion, he performed slightly better than Ortio and Brossoit. That's not good for those two.

51 - Horak, Roman - C - I didn't even know he was there

64 - Howse, Ryan - RW - Terribad

52 - Klimchuk, Morgan - LW - Will be a goal scorer with that shot. Despite not being 6 feet, he did not look small at all.

10 - Knight, Corban - C - Looked like an NHLer. He's not going to score 50 points at any point, but a good 3rd line C in the making regardless.

98 - Leonard, Curtis - LD - Did not notice

78 - Lewis, Trey - LD - Long hair. other than that, not noticable.

68 - Martin, James - LD - did not notice.

23 - Monahan, Sean - C - Reminded me a lot of Patrick Marleau. Solid all round game. I'd like to see him go back to Ottawa though just so we don't rush him. He'll be a 60-80 point guy in the NHL.

74 - Padakin, Pavlo - RW - He's fast. Other than that....

84 - Roy, Eric - LD - Did not really notice.

90 - Van Brabrant, Bryce - LW - Surprisingly good. I looked at his stats in the NCAA and he only posted 13 points last year. Looked like he had better hands and skill than that. I'd sign him without question, even through just one practice. At worst he'll be a decent AHL guy, and he could be a lot more.

I couldn't stay for the whole 2nd group but Hartley was not impressed with one of the free agents in the 2nd group. Watched the kid do the skating drills and asked Conroy to look up the name associated with the number. Pretty much said he must be someone's buddy (i.e. only reason he as there was because someone may have asked a favor). He then asked Conroy to look up his PIM cause maybe he was a "tough guy" and that was the reason he was at camp.

Keep forgetting how young he is....I am excited about him, only a month between him and Monahan.

I decided last minute I could make it to the afternoon session. I agree with all this so I'll just add to it.

Besides Wotherspoon, Seiloff and Kulak looked really solid to me on D. Kulak isn't flashy but on 2-0 drills he looked to have offense of an average forward, and defensively he just smartly seemed to stick with guys and be in position to break up plays. Seiloff has a good hard low point shot, was sticking with guys well in the 1 on 1, and you can tell he really has good lower body strength because he even jolts guys pretty good at a standstill just by digging in his feet momentarily.

Kanzig definitely can improve on his skating quite a bit but it didn't look too bad for his age and size. He seems to pivot and transition well with a powerful first couple steps if he's not off a standstill. He seemed to make up for when a quick guy got a half step on him by using smarts and a real good reach. I actually feel much better about having him in the third round after seeing him out there.

Guys that were good but not quite at the top for me were Granlund, Baertschi, Jooris, McKenzie and O'Donoghue. Granlund just seemed to know where to be and used a good quick release to score quite a bit. Baertschi definitely showed as one of the better players but just seemed off for himself. Jooris started to look good in the more game-like drills, he showed relentless determination and was slippery at times 1 on 1. O'Donoghue is a really good skater especially for his size and while he wasn't flashy but he looked solid all around with some scoring ability. I thought McKenzie looked pretty good defensively also, as probably should be expected with his age and experience.

Poirer looked to have nerves or something. He kept missing the net on 1-0 and 2-1 drills and just seemed a bit disoriented out there. I expect it's not unheard of for guys right out of the draft.

It was just the first day and with some guys maybe not being on the ice much this early in the offseason along with the travel and elevation change I expect some will look a lot better as the camp goes on. More guys looked bagged out there than I'd have expected.

94 - Agostino, Kenny - LW - He'll be an NHLer just based off his second efforts. A guy that you love to have on your 2nd/3rd line. Total pain in the ass to defend against.

92 - Arnold, Bill - C - Looked like he was skating in sand at times. Decent, but a bit slow. That might hinder him.

47 - Baertschi, Sven - LW - Looked worse than some of the walk ons from group A. Expected more effort from someone that is supposed to be a hard worker.

1 - Brossoit, Laurent - G - was at the far end from where I was, but he didn't seem to be bad or good. Just there. Not even in the same class as Gillies or even Berra.

45 - Eddy, David - RW - didn't really notice

65 - Elson, Turner - LW - didn't really notice

62 - Gordon, Coda - RW - Scored a couple times, decent, but limited in terms of potential.

60 - Granlund, Markus - C - Decent hands/shot etc. A bit slow. Could be a top 6 forward. Lack of speed could prevent that.

77 - Jankowski, Mark - C - Basically has the same skills as John Gaudreau (although not quite as polished) but is big. He'll be a possible 1st line center or high end 2nd line C, could see 70+ points as his ceiling.

86 - Jooris, Josh - C - was noticeable, but not as much as Van Brabrant. I'd probably offer him a contract too. If guys like Carter Bancks can get a contract, so should he.

73 - Kanzig, Keegan - LD - Big. Project. Decent. It'll take a lot of work, but there does appear to be something there. I take back the negative things I said before when we picked him. If he can learn, he could be a good good d-man.

61 - Kulak, Brett - LD - Good defensively.

63 - MacKenzie, Drew - RD - Also good defensively. Was the only one I saw actually stop Jankowski today.

96 - O'Donoghue, Dan - C - didn't really notice

37 - Ortio, Joni - G - You know when Kipper doesn't give a crap during the pre game warm up. When Ortio was trying, he looked that good. When he wasn't, he looked like I do in net. I expected a lot more, but he doesn't look any different from the last time I saw him a couple seasons ago.

93 - Penner, Linden - RW - didn't really notice

57 - Poirier, Emile - RW - Missed a lot of shots. Looked rusty. Him and Sven performed at an equivalent level.

49 - Ramage, John - RD - played decently.

59 - Reinhart, Max - C - didn't really notice

50 - Sieloff, Patrick - LD - He's got the potential to be Cory Sarich in his prime. Still a ways to go to meet that though.

56 - Wotherspoon, Tyler - LD - He could be a good two way D-man. Easily our 2nd best D prospect behind Brodie.
