@TSN1050Radio Bill Daly tells TSN Radio what the implications of the Kovalchuk retirement are.
Bill Daly: "Cap advantage" was roughly $4M over the first 3 years of his contract (his first 2 years were significantly below his AAV).
Bill Daly 2nd quote: "Devils will have to pay it back in cap charges over the remaining 12 years of the contract (roughly $300,000 a year)."

Leaves millions on the table and he can't sign with another team for 1 year.

Didn't this guy not sign a $80M contract because it's too low and now he's leaving $70+M on the table? Why?

So in the span of what, a couple seasons the devils lose:
Kovalchuk
Parise
Clarkson
2013 first round pick
2014 first round pick
2011 third round pick
Presumably Martin Brodeur
All they have to show for it all is:
Cory Schneider
Unreal.

@dchesnokov Source close to Kovalchuk said he saw it coming. Most likely Kovalchuk will play for SKA. I am told major announcement will come very soon.

I don't think anyone was saying that there isn't a Russian Factor. Just that it shouldn't' preclude you from drafting Russian's anymore then: the Kyle Turris situation should stop you from drafting guys from New Westminster; or the Justin Schultz situation should prevent you from college; or the Tim Erixon situation should prevent you from drafting players from Sweden; or the Lindros situation should prevent you from drafting players from London ONT, etc, etc, etc
Lots of players jump ship or refuse to sign. When it is a Russian it is a big deal. The vast majority of Russian players that are drafted and have the skill to play in the NHL play in the NHL.
But that won't change anyone's opinion that likes to get caught up in the controversy of a single situation rather then look at the whole objectively.
That said, this horse has been beaten to death so back to our regularly scheduled program ..... sucks to be NJ right now. And Cammalleri is available.

Pissed isn't the word. From blaming Bettman to organizing a Kovalchuk jersey burning party. Not pretty at HFBoards right now!

Holy. At the age of 30? Unbelievable.
Also as one of the people trying to argue that the 'Russian factor' is a bit over blown, I take that back.
Draft ALL the Canadians.
Or Swiss.

He'll probably get at least a 50 mil contract in Russia. It'll be tax free. Plus he'll get endorsements. When was the last time you saw a Russian player with an endorsement in Canada for anything other than hockey gear?
He'll probably make very close to and possibly more money in Russia.
And yes, another reason not to draft Russians.

I remember the game in Calgary where the Devils were on the powerplay and Kovalchuk coughed up the puck to give a Flames player a breakaway and Kovalchuk just gave a "whatever" wave and skated to the bench. It was possible that he could have caught the Flame and broke up the play. That kind of attitude spoke volumes about his commitment to competing. He was probably only in North America for the money. Now that he can get big coin in mother Russia, why not go back? Not cool.

So only Russians retire from the NHL?
Hakan Loob had just turned 29 when he did the same thing to play in Sweden.
