Just looking at some of the other recent NCAA roster players and the numbers they put up in their WJC years.

Here are some of the NCAA team Canada players:

2008 Kyle Turris had 35 pts in 36 games (Wisconsin)
2007 Dan Bertram had 25 pts in 40 games (Boston College)
2007 Jonathan Toews had 46pts in 34 games (North Dakota)
2006 Dan Bertram had 26 pts in 39 games (Boston College)

I think he is on the radar because he essentially jumped all the way to NCAA from Canadian High School. He plays in a pretty good conference (I am not an NCAA expert but Providence plays some pretty elite teams from what I see) and adapted pretty well to the challenge. I think he will play a bigger role for providence so the opportunity will definitely be there.

This place would be much less entertaining (although far more on topic) if Moon was banned. Yes I realize the irony of my post being totally offtopic. Point and case.

Oh and awesome for Jankowski, pretty excited to see how the next couple years play out for his development.

This is a huge deal for the Flames , add to that Sieloff and Gillies for Team USA and whatever Euro prospects are eligible . Hopefully Monahan is playing on the big club to start the year , and the team is doing so poorly that they ship him off to the WJCs

The guys air lifted from the NHL to join the World Juniors never seem to do too great. If Monahan is playing with the Flames, and playing well, I hope they don't let him go just for the World Juniors.

Thats certainly a risk , but I'm thinking more in terms of personal development . I would bet money the Flames will be bottom feeders again this year , if they are , then a WJC would be better than NHL garbage time , especially if Monahan is in Any kind of leadership role .

Imagine Monahan and Jankowski as the top two line centres for Canada, that'd be crazy but extremely unlikely.

If Monahan stays up in Calgary it could increase Jankowski's chances for the WJC. Interesting dynamic there.

Given he played some wing this year in college it seems that Jankowski could be converted to a winger for Team Canada if he made it. Usually Canada takes a bunch of centres and throws several of them on the wing. His size would be appealing at centre or wing.

Hopefully he puts in a good showing, has a good season and then gets an invite in December!

if jankowski has a great start to the year, and a good showing at camp, AND if many of the pencilled in centers end up in the big league this year, then perhaps he has a shot on making Team Canada.

I sure hope that happens.

The ironic thing about this thread - and I hate moon's style of posting as well - is that his thought process is probably fairly accurate in this case. Hockey Canada knows four players will not be available for the August camp. It needs to add players to fill out a roster for that exhibition tournament.. Connections with the people making the decisions help in any aspect of life and business.

Odds are, Jankowski is expected to be a body for the August camp and tournament, and probably little more. Regardless of how he gained this opportunity, however, the opportunity is now there. At worst, he will play with and learn from elite players his age. At best, he will impress the hell out of everyone and get his name on the radar for the December camp

Jankowski must have been scouted and is on the reserved list if more invites are // were required.

While part of me agrees I still feel that there is no better experience gained for a young player than playing in that tournament. It's a world stage, lots of pressure and your playing for your country. I'm actually surprised more teams don't let their eligible players take the 2 weeks to go play in that tourney, it's always around christmas break too so the NHL schedule usually seems lighter around world juniors anyways. If Monahan is playing with the Flames and playing well I would not complain if we kept him up through that tourney but I also wouldn't be upset if we let him go play for Canada because I know he's gaining valuable experience on a large stage.

Naturally. I'm not saying he is being invited despite being clearly unfit. Only that his connections don't hurt. I am also saying not to expect to see him centring the top line. He's going in as a body. Hopefully he comes out as a candidate to make the the team in December.

Not really. There's a very good chance he wasn't even discussed until his Uncle got put in charge. And even if he was, there were probably several other players ahead of Jankowski on that list.

I know its all cool to hate on Moon around here, but he's probably right.

Ya, no. It's possible, but not probable. Why is it so hard to believe that his size and skill put him on the radar? He may be raw yet but at 6' 3"+ with soft hands and still another 6 months to add some bulk, he's an intriguing package. No doubt if MacKinnon and Monahan were more that likely going, he probably wouldn't get an invite but that's not the case. Also, he's still a long shot.

Nope, don't believe it for a second. This is a National team (lots of focus on it), there is no way a player's only reason to get invitted is due to a relative.

Janks was (unconfirmed- dont crucify me) a healthy 6'3 or something at camp this year? Some unnamed posters must be giants to classify him as undersized ..

Hockey in Canada is notoriously full of nepotism. In the NHL, you can't look very far before seeing tonnes of family and personal connections. You don't see this nearly as much in other professional sports. Even at the development level, a lot of the players that get additional attention are ones that have connections. It's about who you know.

I do think Jankowski deserves a shot, but like you said, the family connections don't hurt.

Eric Brewer made the Olympic Team because Kevin Lowe wanted one of his own guys on the Oilers to make the squad.

Tearing them apart? If these guys have such fragile self-esteem that they can't handle some guys on a hockey forum questioning if they should be on Team Canada, then they're not cut out for professional sports. The public scrutiny and criticism that comes with the entertainment/business of the NHL is a big, big reason these guys get paid millions of dollars a year.

And if we're supposed to lay off young guys, should we lay off Oilers prospects as well? Or is it only once they're drafted by the Flames that these young men deserve public support?
