I think that Gagner, Eberle, RNH, Hemsky are top 6 guys that are smaller, softer, weaker (whatever term you want to use) and that Hall and Yakupov (the "bigger" guys) aren't really that tough, hard, strong etc. to make up the difference. I also think the top 6 is made up of guys weak defensively or at best average.
If I was the Oilers I would be using assets like MPS and a 2nd to try and improve defense or toughness/defense on the top 6. In Perron they are adding more of the same of an offensive guy with questions about his overall game and is a 2nd line guy on a team with a ton of 2nd line wingers already.

Perron was brought in for 2nd line LW. Gagner is 2nd line center. They still have to sign Gagner. If he were to get moved, they would trade for a 2nd line center back.

Not sure why you are so worked up about some difference of opinions on a middle of the road player. I would expect that with almost anybody with the skillset of Perron that some will like him better than others. I am not going to say I am wrong because you don't agree with my view of a player.
|
You're not going to say you're wrong because you never have and you never will....moving on.
Perron isn't middle of the road at all. He had injuries derail the 2 seasons prior to last, but before that he was on the verge of breaking out and becoming a dominant player. He reminds me of a slightly smaller Corey Perry with only a slightly less lethal shot. He could be at that level if he's fully recovered from his injuries. That's the only question mark IMO. The talent has always been there.
And he's very solid defensively, the plus minus is just an indicator of his consistency over the years, nothing more.

This I get but Perron is tougher than any oiler in that top 6 so instant upgrade IMO.

It's awesome that he was "just about to break out" but having seen plenty of guys just about to break out not actually do it I will wait until he does before calling him more than a middle of the road player.
He will need to improve a ton to be close to a Hart level player in this league. He is 25 not 18 and the injuries have been one part of him not reaching that level.

I think he is very similar although not as good as Hemsky who it seems he will replace and he is not tougher than Hall or Yakupov and on the same level as Eberle of guys who try but just aren't strong enough to do much.

Agreed, but I never said he would be a Hart candidate. Just said he was comparable to Perry's style of play and talent level before injuries set him back.

I honestly don't know how you see him as Hemsky. Ales was always a very soft but highly skilled player. Perron is nothing like that.
CP never fails to amaze me.

He's a better version of Mason Raymond, just not as fast. MPS is the exactly type of player Edmonton should be keeping.

soft player that skates really fast but doesn't score and is easy to play against?

Ask many Flames fans here and they will say Hemsky always went to the tough areas much like you are claiming that Perron does. Both have injury concers, Hemsky has more offense, Perron is younger.

I've seen MPS knock down players without even trying, he has strength and size he just needs to learn how to use it. I think St. Louis will be the winners of this trade ultimately. Perron has concussion issues and he seems like a bit of a d#####.

Funny but wrong. Have you watched him play?
Perron is a much better player than PRV and not soft. He's not overly physical but absolutely is not soft.
Perron is offensively gifted and capable of 60-plus points. The Oilers get a top-six winger with good offensive skills for a second-round pick and an unproven third liner - not bad.
The concussion thing is way overstated. It was from a head shot from Thornton. He has returned and been fully healthy taken many big hits. Concussions are not a concern with him.
I don't like giving up PRV but Perron is what the team needs, so good trade, I guess. If PRV develops into what he can be, the Oilers lose, but Perron is already what they need.

Yes I have. Have you read the thread? I already said I have seen him play plenty and that he is a better player than MPS, but better overreact because everyone doesn't think your precious Oilers are awesome.

I agree with most of this, Oilers got great value in this trade. Not sure how the bolded section makes any sense though, why does it matter that Thornton delivered a head shot? Fact is Perron has a concussion history, which means increased concussion risks going forward. If he stays healthy it's a steal, that's far from a guarantee though

Smart move by MacT, I must admit. Needed to trade some youth for experience and this adds to Oilers depth, which is still a weakness.
As a Flames fan I can look at the bright side and be glad the Oilers got a player that is somewhat redundant (as Moon says) for their high-end prospect + 2nd rd pick.
Edit: wow 4 x $3.8125 seems like a lot to pay Perron. I can see why StL traded him.

Oilers win this trade so far. But it makes me wonder if the Blues were concerned about his health and dealt Perron while the value was still there. Otherwise, I don't really understand why they made this deal.

They have a self imposed cap. PRV will come way cheaper than Perron.

They are clearing cap space for Pieterangelo and Stewart who they are expected to sign really shortly.

Sure have. You either haven't watched him play, haven't paid attention or will blast everything the Oilers do. I think it's the latter.
Even we fans don't think the Oilers are awesome, but they're improving.

The Blues have better/better value guys and needed to clear space on their team to re-sign some RFA's and fit in guys they already have.
With Oshie, Steen, Tarasenko and Roy/Berglund/Backes they already have 4 guys who can easily play top 6 arguably are better than Perron. Through in Stewart and Schwartz and it makes more sense to pay MPS a couple of million less to play in the top 9 than Perron.
