21 players have filed for salary arbitrartion. UPD: All 21 players settle
http://www.nhlpa.com/news/21-players...ry-arbitration
Players can still negotiate a contract before arbitration begins.
With the new CBA teams cannot walk away if salary awarded is less than $3.5 million

Wheeler probably gets an arb reward over 3.5. Question is, does Winnipeg feel he is worth over 3.5. Heck even Bryan Little too.
Yeah, outside of that seems like Stewart is the only other RFA going to arbitration that looks like he could get rewarded over 3.5

I'd wouldn't cry if the Flames made a hard push to acquire either Wheeler or Little. Wheeler may be expendable with the arrival of Setoguchi.

Slighty OT but any reason why the no walk away if under 3.5 million clause was included in the CBA?
That seems like an awful deal for the owners and a way to nickle and dime a team to death with mediocre guys getting a million more than they should with.
As mentioned LA look like they could get screwed with those guys all being under 3.5 million but being over priced based on the two play-off runs.

Not worries about any Jets players. Seto doesn't replace Wheeler.

I wonder what Sam Gagner gets and what the number is that the Oilers walk away from.

Because the CBA isn't determined by the sole whims of the owners.

Not OT at all, I was wondering this too. This is interesting:

Meaning it is $3.5 million this year and will be going up if the ALS goes up which will surely increase when the cap increases. Maybe too many teams were letting lower end players go to arbitration instead of actually negotiating with them? Maybe this is the NHL's way to try and save some arbitration resources? I'm not sure.

You may be right but it seems like a weird clause to me. I mean chances are if you're a RFA and your team walks away from an arbitration offer under $3.5 million making you a UFA that some team is going to bite. Gives the player more power too.

It should be!
That said, it isn't like the option is walk away from any ruling or walk away from 3.5 million and under.
Seems like a number that I would have wanted to work with if I was the owners and again something that could really screw them. Don't see it being a big sticking point with the players as it only helps out the lower end guys they usually like to screw and could hurt some teams in terms of cap space.

Not even close. (re. Setoguchi)... Wheeler is playing for the Jets like they wanted him to play in Boston..... He has been a top 3 forward for the Jets for the last 2 years.
Little is a bit small... But Wheeler is big and started playing like it..... Maybe Ladd has been a good influence.
Bogosian is the really hard one to figure out in arbitration. He would likely be the Flames #1 guy but he has been nicked and missed 15 games last year and 17 the year before. He is only 23 next week and has shown to be a solid top 4 if not top 2 NHL d-man.

Does filing for arbitration have any effect on possible contract offers from other teams, or does the player become 'protected'.
For that matter, when an RFA is qualified, does that protect the team from an offersheet?
For me, it really boils down to I want a team to offersheet Tanev, just to screw the Canucks, and for what they'd have to give up, I'm kinda surprised it has not happened.

Between 4 and 5 per year is what he probably wants. I don't see him getting less then that. As much as we think he's meh, he has been one of the best forwards on a dreadful team and that's going to count for a lot.
I'm guess 4.25, Oilers won't walk away no matter what.
