Default Big Jankowski Added to Team Canada U20 Summer Roster

Via a press release from Hockey Canada.

http://hockeycanada.ca/en-ca/news/ad...or-summer-camp

As per HC: MacKinnon, Drouin, Reinhart and Reilly won't be available for exhibition games in early August, so Jankowski gets the spot.

Going to be an exciting WJHC this year. Could see what, maybe 4 Flames prospects on the team Canada?

Just posted this in the prospect camp thread. Deserves it's own. Good news for us Flames fans. Likely means they know MacKinnon and Monahan and a couple others may not be available.

That's awesome news, nice to know he's on the radar. Will give the kid a huge boost to be among those players.

A couple weeks ago it was no Flames prospects, not it's Monahan, Poirier and Jankowski

Good I am really hoping he is able to take big strides and this might get him on the WJHC radar.

Surprising but with his uncle involved I guess not overly surprising.

Hopefully he can improve enough to make the addition worthwhile.

Oh come on!! Jankowski is a good prospect with size. You are doing a huge disservice to him by implying his uncle got him on the team.

This isn't midget hockey where your dad puts you on the team. This is the World Junior Championships. Darn right insulting of a post.

Being at this camp means he's on the radar... but like all these players it's not a sure thing just because you're at the summer camp. Still a lot of work for Jankowski to do but it's a great step forward. He made big strides last season, especially towards the latter half of the year.

Leipsic from Nash also gets a spot. But good news for Janko.

I think it is fair to say that Jankowski's circumstances have something to do with his being named to the roster. His being a first round pick probably had more to do with it than his uncle's involvement, but there are probably some other first year NCAA players who had comparable seasons that were (likely) never even considered.

It is nothing but good news for Jankowski and Flames fans though. I hope he tears it up in the camp and forces his way onto the team. He's certainly got talent, and if his training has paid off it wouldn't surprise me if he is in the mix until the end.

He is a kid that most Flames fans (and even the Flames) will admit is more of a 2-3 years away kid than 1-2 years so may not be at the level that many of the other kids are at now.

He also is at a smaller NCAA school that had a mediocre season and was a late first rounder.

The point wasn't that his uncle got him on the team (don't think that kind of crap happens at the WJHC level) but that he is a guy that could have fallen through the cracks and having a guy that knows a lot about him makes sense as to why he may have been brought up in the conversation as opposed to being passed over in such a tight competition with so many deserving guys.

I think he is on the team because the team canada staff think he is good enough not his because his uncle is the Head Scout. Just makes more sense to me that they looked at him.

To say that his uncle being part of the selection committee had nothing to do with his inclusion is a little naive. A lot of hockey is politics. Who you know not what you know (or how good you are). He is a first round pick so that makes it easy for his uncle to include him. I am sure there are tons of guys with similar skill sets and development that Hockey Canada doesn't even think about.

He has earned this invite as much as the other guys on the list, but I am sure he didn't have to earn it as much lots of guys who didn't make the list would have had to.

Then don't mention his uncle if that's what you think. It just makes you look like your looking for trouble on this thread.

To your point, I think the only thing that makes Hockey Canada look at him more than they might have otherwise is the fact he is a first round pick. Any first round pick automatically has a bigger target on their chest, gets more looks from scouts etc. Nepotism had nothing to do with the selection, so don't bring it up.

Looking for trouble is a good way to describe the response to my post and the people that thanked it. But not unexpected based on history.
