Iggy left the Flames because he was told by everyone to GTFO of Calgary. Alfie leaves because...WTF? Hold your head up high Iggy. You'll win the Cup.

Explains the departure. Certainly different from the Iginla situation where Alfredsson felt as though he was perpetually making salary concessions. Safe to say Iginla never took a discount.

Oh, and this made me laugh:

And sometimes, you feel the team takes advantage of you. When Alfredsson heard his ask was unfair after almost a decade of team-friendly cap hits, he probably powerbombed a Volvo.

Iggy over Alfie anytime. Iggy's been to game 7 of the SC final, Alfie's only made it to game 5.

Hilarious thread. Great bump.
Say what you like about comparing Alfie and Iggy as players (I think they both are/were great), no doubt Iggy provided something to the Flames on his departure. Alfie, not so much...

Imagine how pissed Flames fans would be if Iggy had pulled a Alfie? It's a good thing Flames management forced the issue and got a commitment out of Iginla before the deadline and were able to move him for something decent. That is a heck of a lot better than what Ottawa is left with right now.

Uhm you don't need insider information to understand what the general market rate is for players. Show me a counter factual that Iginla was getting a discount.

It's not exactly a fact, but it's pretty widely accepted that Iginla gave the Flames a hometown discount for his final contract in Calgary.

What wait?
If you say something, back it up. Don't tell someone else to prove your point for you if challenged on it. What you just said is the equal of "well.. prove me wrong!!"

The big difference is that Ottawa was a playoff team when Alfie's contract expired. The Sens certainly weren't going to trade their captain before the chase for the cup. It was fortunate for the Flames that they were so far out of it at the deadline. I guarantee the Flames would have be "Alfied" by Iginla if they were trying to make a playoff push, and kept him before his contract expired.

The difference is, if Calgary was a playoff team, I think Iginla would probably re-sign with the Flames. Flip the scenarios around, where Iggy bolts from the Flames after becoming UFA even though the Flames are a playoff team. With how some posters are already jilted by Iginla exercising his right to use his NTC and kybosh the Bruins deal, these same posters would be screaming bloody murder if Iginla pulled an Alfie.

I guess I look at it as cap hit, nobody in the league had a $10 million cap hit. Iginla's cap hit was $7 million here's a list of other players in that range for cap hits:
http://www.capgeek.com/leaders/?seas...on=-1&limit=25
When I look at that list it doesn't jump out at me that Iginla is significantly underpaid. Sure maybe he left $500k off the table and he could have gone for longer term but the players that signed those longer deals were also younger than him. I don't think it's a comparable to what the previous article I posted argued about the kind of discount Alfredsson took.

Iginla produced less and saw less success compared to his peers with higher average cap hits during the preceding season or couple of seasons. Joe Thornton for example, with a cap hit of 200k more for 2 years less duration, was a couple of points way from 5 consecutive 90 point seasons, a year removed from 114 point season and scored 96 going into the summer where he signed that deal. His teams also advanced further in the playoffs.
Iginla himself was coming off his most productive season in his career heading into the offseason where he signed the contract. But, compared his production and age, he wasn't at the top.
Spezza was coming off seasons where he was way over a point per game and had made a cup finals appearance, and is 6 years younger than Iginla. Hossa got 7.4, but only for 1 year. Heatley same thing, well over a PPG player, scored 141 goals in the preceding 230ish games and was a year removed from a cup finals appearance. 4 years younger than Iginla.
7.5 for Iginla at the time would have been an overpayment if you compared him to the other top players and their salaries at the time.
He may not have gotten all he could've had he gone to free agency (which is where most of the bloated deals on that list come from), but he certainly didn't take a 'home town discount' to the tune of what alfredsson did, putting up 103 points in the first year of his deal for 4.8 million.
Huge difference between not taking all you can get and signing at a discount. Iginla could've gotten the same dollars per term as thornton I'm sure, but term costs money.
