Ongoing Senate scandal
http://www.nationalpost.com/m/wp/new...ate=2013-07-08
Looks like it wasn't just Wright who knew about the deal. According to Wright's lawyers, others in the PMO knew as well. This story gets more stinky by the minute.

Maybe we're scandal-weary? Besides, it always ends up the same. Opposition supporters become outraged, Convservative supporters go with the "Well the Liberals were worse 15 years ago" argument, and round and round we go.

It is pretty yawn since there is no way Harper will be PM of Canada after the next election.

Except in this case Conservative supporters aren't defending, supporting, deflecting, or condoning this behavior...

The prevailing attitude from Conservative supporters I've seen in previous threads about the various CPC scandals seems to be: "I'm not happy about this at all, but I sure as hell am not voting for the Liberals or the NDP!"
Incidentally, that's pretty much the same attitude most Liberal-supporting posters here had during the 2004-05 years with respect to the Sponsorship Scandal. It's too bad those posts were lost in a forum and/or database upgrade years ago; it would be fun to compare the reaction of various posters (from both sides) when it's their party in the wrong instead of the other guys.

The sponsorship scandal is what made me vote Tory, however all the recent Tory scandals will make me vote for the Grits this time around. Can't stand corruption.

Why is this one corruption?
From what I can tell Duffys expenses were rejected, he was forced to pay it back, so the PC party through a bunch of hoops paid him back for it.
To me this one has been pretty low on the scandel scale. What am i missing. Outside of many senators improperly claiming expenses what makes this one newsworthy?

Why was he trying to claim these as expenses? Did he not know the rules (no excuse)? It appears as though he deliberately tried to subvert them.

Well, you've got the branch of the government that makes policy paying off a member of the branch that is supposed to be the sober second thought that structures policies into law consistent with the constitution. It's corruption in that the senator owes the PMO a 'favour' and would be somewhat akin to the PMO, buying a an SCC justice a trip to Hawaii while there are cases in front of the court dealing with with the constitutionality of government laws.
Definitely corruption although a less expensive kind of corruption than adscam. Arguably this strikes more directly at the heart of how our system is supposed to work but they're both pretty bad examples of corruption.

I think it has to be mentioned that some of his "expenses" were also billed while he was campaigning for the CPC. Clearly partisan.
Honestly, if you or I were to not know where our residence is and therefore file our taxes improperly how long do you think that excuse would be viable for the CRA? I'm not an accountant, but I'm guessing we'd be screwed. This is no different. Senators running around claiming residences wherever its better for them to get bigger expense cheques. An absolute disgrace.

this crap makes me sad - these senators get so much stuff, they then have to go and take more.......and it must be nice having a job where you are responsible for sweeping stuff under the carpet......

Harper must not be impressed with this lawyer. You're not supposed to take everyone down with you when you get caught..

I think Harper is making a pretty good case, so far, for the abolition of the Senate.
I think people are getting pretty tired of some Conservative and Liberal Senator's misbehavior and their sense of entitlement and elitism.

Its like getting hired by someone but then that someone can never fire you. You have a job for life, no matter what misdeeds you do....
The only people who can fire you are your co-workers and half of them are just as crooked as you are.

Nice try. The issue here isn't the senate though, its people who are "entitled to their entitlements" as stated in the article, and criminals. Harper isn't making a case for anything other than him being implicated in the cover-up.
