I like them better than the flat version we have, but I think a mild dip or rise in the centre would've been enough to make the profile interesting without being remotely grotesque.

From the north facing side it looks normal but from the south with the curved side it's chunky. Still, beautiful.

That TELUS video features lots of young people during the bit they focus on residential.
That's a bait and switch. No way in hell any young person is going to be able to afford the condos in this building. Not a frickin' chance.
Well, except for the trust fund babies, which this city unfortunately has an abundance of.

Damn.

Why did you have to post that? Goddamnit.

It hurts me just as much as it hurts you to see it.
I too am not crazy on the "bat ears" roof design, I think if they did a sloping roof from one end of the curve over to the other it could have looked really slick.

There's something about that roof-line that just screams 80s to me (especially in the last image) - like one of those hulking monoliths we saw proposed but not built in Calgary back then. It would have been weird. I also don't really like the covered plaza and building over the street.
I do like the height though!

So will Calgary ever ease up on the height restrictions? It's really too bad they can't build them higher. I've never really noticed how big of a shadow buildings can cast on the Bow river, but it can't be that bad can it? I mean, the river is north of downtown, and the sun goes from east to west. How can there be big shadows?

There are plenty of lots in the CBD that can easily achieve supertall status without shadowing the river pathway. It is somewhat unfortunate that Encana purchased that plot of land, and I believe we should not make exceptions to the rule.

The sun spends most of its time in the southern half of the sky here. The reason you don't notice bad shadows on the Bow is because the bylaw is working!

This is the path the sun takes on the equinox at 50 degrees latitude (Calgary, roughly), south is to the right. Even though it rises and sets due east and west as you see here, look where there the sun is most of the day. Even worse in the winter.

That domed Bow roofline reminds me a bit of a forest arco from SC2000

In case any library fans were wondering... The team with Koolhaus was not shortlisted, as far as I know.

Sky is going to look bang nasty (that means good so I've been told) from the Calgary tower.

They could be going for the d-bag trust fund baby or leverage king demographic, like this T.O complex:

Yes, who cares about the Trout population in the Bow in the downtown area?
The Bow is a cesspool.
Build'em higher!

Umm, the shadow restriction is for the Bow river pathway (south side), not the river itself (although it accomplishes the lack of shadowing on the river as a direct result).
I'm in favour of it, and like how it has created a tiered building height from closer to the river rising as you go south. It gives a great visual look.
