I find it funny that so many hate Butler and this signing, but most seem to be okay with the Russel trade. If you guys think Butler is bad on D ,wait until you see Russel.

We've seen how bad Butler has been for the past 120 games. I'll give Russell at least 15-20 games until i call him butlersoft useless.

Trust me when i say Butler will look like an all-star compared to Russel in defence zone play.

Does he have potential to tie the modern era record of -7 in one game?

Why can't you do the same with Butler? They are both on one way and are both around the same cap hit.

Yup. If he was in that game he might have beatin it. I am not kidding when i say out of the entire bunch of "rag tags" that the flames have on D that Russel is the worst in his own zone.

I have trouble believeing that you have watched that many Blues games to engage into Russellsoft Hate Factor 5 like us who have watched Butler 120+ games.

I watch a lot of hockey on center ice. I can tell you have never seen him play if you think there is a chance that he is going to be good in his own zone.

Edit: I would much rather have Butler off this team. That should show you how much faith i have in Russel.

I actually do sometimes question whether or not CP are as knowledgeable about hockey as they claim to be. Because if the guys name isn't Brodie, you think all defencemen suck.
I actually do question whether people actually watch Flames games or just have it on in the background while they knit a sweater or just watch the hilites. I watch every game, I see what Butler is all about, don't know how others can defend the guy. He makes horrible decisions, has zero hockey IQ, isn't physical, plays constantly die on his stick in the opponents zone, he continually doesn't tie up his man in front and always plays in pure panic mode when he has the puck on his stick.

I'd like somebody to explain to me what Butler does do well to warrant him having a roster spot on this team, other than give us a better chance of drafting Conner McDavid because that one is obvious to me.

I'm glad Butler is around just to soak up the CP hate. If he wasn't back, CP would have to arbitrarily find another player to hate. That might ruin my ability to watch them play next year.

What is confusing is the idea that you believe that anyone really "loves" Butler. There are a number of posters who clearly do not hate him, nor the signing, but this is far from "love"; more aptly, it is the recognition that a marginal NHL player received a contract extension in range with marginal NHL players to fill a position on what is sure to be a less-than-marginal team for ONE YEAR. How can anyone "love" or "hate" a placeholder?

Strange that people actually think Butler is a decent D-man. The guy is a huge liability and I'm having a tough time thinking of the last good game he played for the Flames. Why resign him if you're trying to improve the hockey team? Flames need a new direction and I'm afraid this signing is a step backwards.

A step backwards? It's a one year deal!

How will this contract and its expiration at the end of this season in any way affect the current direction of the Flames and their rebuild?

Butler is as bad as some think. He makes us worse by being on the ice. I guess if we're aiming for a bottom finish he'll help

Uhhhh, I remember that game far too well.

I really don't care that he's the "whipping boy" for the team. Fact of the matter is that we could get better defence on this team from a half dozen pylons, and they don't cost 1.7m.

Might as well have called the Regehr trade a complete and total bust of epic proportions and just leave it at that.
