i don't know this player so can't comment on that aspect...

but i don't understand it from an asset perspective; why wouldn't we pick up an RFA that had a qualifying offer from the blues for free on waivers instead of trading a 5th rounder where we just picked up Eric Roy this draft?

can someone explain this asset management please? (please note...not trying to be sarcastic just legitimately wondering what the benefit would be to the flames)

From reports it seems that the Flames were trying to get some other defensemen signed at the time that Russel was on waivers and now that they can't get them signed they moved on to plan b which is acquiring Russel.

Bad d man, good add. I would have preferred a marginal prospect or weaker roster player instead of a pick, but I'm not heartbroken over a 5th.

This gets the Flames a little bit closer to 1st overall next year.

Breen I agree but please tell me why having wotherspoon in the minors is sooo bad.

Wotherspoon definitely will need at least a year in the AHL. Russel will impact him in no way.

Likely because we couldn't add a contract without losing one (same reason Knight and Ramo weren't signed till today)
