One shortened season of moderate success and the Leafs feel that they are a couple peices away from a dynasty, so start to immediately overpay at first opportunity to "take that next step", as I am sure the justification is and TSN and Snet and Brophy will laud the Leafs activity.
Think Burke would've done these moves? Me either.
Imagine if thy had beat the Bruins, there wouldn't be room from Clarkson as Bozak would've gotten more and other Leafs would've gotten extensions like all those Oilers after the Cup run.

Holy moly that Clarkson contract is so bad. He hasn't even scored 50 points in an NHL season. I couldn't be happier that Feaster is staying out of this craziness so far.

I dunno. But I think so far the Islanders have won. I wish the Flames got Bouchard at that term/price.

I wish people would quit asking why did we have a lockout. Crazy contracts was not the reason for the lockout. Cost certainty was. For owners now they receive 50% of the revenue. Buyouts, long term deals, retiries, etc all count against the players % of HRR. Thats all the lockout was about. Everything else the owners asked for was window dressing for the fans.
The owners know that no matter how crazy these contracts are they will never as a group pay out more than 50% of HRR. Now can we all quit asking "why did we have a lockout"

Thats big term for a guy like Clarkson. 7 year term for a player his age who plays the game he does seems like a 3 year buy out later on to me.

It's like they time warped back to the John Ferguson Jr. days where every offseason the Leafs threw around $$$ to average players like Jason Allison, Jason Blake, Pavel Kubina, etc.

With eight players signed for 29 mil in 2015, the leafs are really screwing themselves. They're gonna wish they still had a compliance buyout but wouldn't know whether to use it on clarkson or bozak. Both are 3m signings IMO. Now how are they gonna sign Kessel, he's gonna want 8mil x 8 years with the $ being thrown away today.
Can anyone else see the leafs giving up assets next year so other teams will buyout their players for them?

Man, I remember when the media went nuts about the Dennis Wideman signing. Clarkson's contract is a hundred times worse.
Of course, I expect TSN will shower praise upon the Leafs as always while condemning Feaster for giving up a 5th for Russell.

What did Clarkson do to deserve $5m plus a season? So TO got rid of an overpaid skilled player but never play much and signed an overpaid less talented hockey player for 5 years.

His drop in productivity last season is weird. Was he playing hurt or something?
24 pts in 48 games.
Breakdown:
First 14 games, 16 points, 1.14 points per game
Last 34 games, 8 points, 0.23 points per game

I'd rather have Clarkson at that price the Wideman. Clarkson brings a lot more to the table than Wideman. If Clarkson isnt scoring, he's hitting, he's fighting, being a leader. Wideman is a one Dimensional offensive defenseman who is atrocious defensively, he's really a power play specialist who gets to play lots here to justify his salary.
