Wow, that sucks.
Surely they will need most of that full time staff back when they are fully up and running again right?

Hey CP - looking for some insight/help. My partner and I won a pretty awesome Rodeo package at my golf tournament in June, and we've decided that we'd like to auction it off and donate the full proceeds to the Calgary Zoo. I've done some looking around to see if there is any kind of 'crowdsourcing' auction site where people can register bids, but wasn't really finding anything decent. Does anyone have any ideas for a website we can use? We'd be plastering the auction all over FB, Forums we frequent, Twitter, etc. Or would we be looking at better traction by contacting CBC Radio and letting them auction it off on air in the morning and afternoon.
FYI for the package:
2 Level 1 Centre Rodeo *includes admit to Stampede Park)
4x $10 drink vouchers, for each person (8 vouchers total)
Parking Pass
Souvenir Program Vouchers
Food as part of the seats - Seat service is 1-3pm.

That sucks about the Zoo. I wonder how many offered to stay on-board and help with the clean-up. I feel bad for them.

Crews involved with this definitely deserve a big kudos.

My Father In-Laws house in High River was a yellow with only sewer backup, the house two down with not much of a difference in location was a red. That's how it works, just because one person gets covered doesn't mean his neighbor should.

When I was in grade 4 it was 1988,Calgary 1988. I remember everything about Calgary then.
Spirit, dedication and the Willingness to do anything for anybody..I hope Calgarians and Southern Albertans remember this spirit.I know we are tired and sore but we must remember our fellow neighbours.

I understand that, but everyone on my block got water damage due to the same reason. It was not the river spilling over the banks that got us here.

Did the water get in you property through doors/windows or did it come up through the drain?

All up through the drain. I had a great look at my windows while they were somewhat underwater and the sills on the inside were bone dry. Same for most of my neighbours that I have talked with.

Can you get a valve to close it off if water starts to flow wrong way? Seems like a simple solution for the future.
Do you have concerns that all the silt and muck have plugged up the storm system and with one good heavy storm it backing up into your basement again?

My grandfather is finally being let back into High River today to look at his house. It's been about two weeks I think. Under water most of that time, as far as I understand.

Definitely a concern, as the back alley always floods in sections in the winter. So it might not take much right now to get our basements wet again.
As for your first point, maybe an engineer can chime in but if such a system kept my basement bone dry wouldn't the pressure from all the water around the house possibly crack or shift my foundation? Some folks that pumped their basements too quickly while water was still around the house apparently had this problem.

It's called a backwater valve; I installed one when I had to break open the concrete to put in my bathroom in the basement.
I think you are right Bigtime, in that all that would have done was prevent the sewer backup from coming in. The water table was just too high and it would have found another way in. At least if the source was the sewer you have a chance with your insurance company.
Kind of a gross thought- I wonder how many people might have poo'd in their own basements to make it look like a sewer backup.

I'm no engineer, but likely the water would just seep in if it was high enough or the ground was saturated. Also not covered on a homeowners policy in case you were curious.
