He should just sign with Boston. The Boston fans would probably get over what happened considering they would have him AND the assets they offered us for him

I would rather spend 20 years on the Flames and do my best than do 15 years, screw off cause I wanted to touch a Cup and fail at it because "I" wanted it or felt I "deserved" it. There have been many great players in the HOF who never touched a cup and stuck it out with their team cause they were about the team. They were team players- hockey is a team sport. And man would I feel like an ass if I never did touch that Cup for my own selfish purposes and desserted the team and the fans who supported my ass and loved me for years only to not only come up empty handed Stanley wise, but fan wise.

So if Iginla stayed would we be better off not being a rebuilding team? The entire team was built around Iginla and it just wasn't working any more. I'd rather be a rebuilding team and get prospects out of him than sit around for another 3-5 years waiting for him to retire
The team asked him to leave and he left for the betterment of the team regardless of the team he ultimately went too

The biggest reason I wouldn't want Iginla back on the Flames is he sucks now.
9 years ago absolutely dominant
6 years ago great offensively but playing one way
3 years ago strong offense but noticeably weak elsewhere
Now good offense but so weak 200' and on the boards that he's a true liability
There was a reason the guy played like 10 minutes in the elimination game. He was probably legitimately their ~10th best forward. He's honestly not worth more than 2, at MOST 3 mil a year, but really mainly as a PP specialist.
I own 2 Flames jerseys: #12 and #2. Watched pretty much both of their entire careers. Iginla had a period of unrivaled dominance, but there is no doubt in my mind that MacInnis was the greater player for the course of career through the end in StL.

Wow, that is awfully chauvinistic of you. I honestly don't think that Iginla is an elite player anymore and won't push the Canucks over the top by any stretch, but your comment is ridiculously sexist. The woman should blindly follow the man because he makes more money and she has no input whatsoever because it may offend the sensibilities of some fans in Calgary?
I think that the fans put more emphasis on the rivalry than the actual players do.

1986 called and they want their outlook back.
Sorry, that isn't how it works anymore. People who have a choice - and that means UFAs, players with NMCs, and executives like Shanahan - make these decisions as a family. If they're young and they're looking for that first big contract, sure, they'll go to whoever pays them most. But guys like Iginla and Shanahan have piles of money already. They have kids in school. Their spouses have family, friends. Doctors they like. Nannies. Schools their kids love. They don't just cheerfully pick up stakes and move wherever their husband has the best chance at winning. Shanahan says he turned down Calgary because his family didn't want to leave NY/USA. I believe him.
As for rivalries, these days those are confined to fans. NHL players simply don't hate other teams and other players the way they used too. There's too much player movement, too much money involved. I'd wager the proximity of Vancouver to his summer home, even the climate, matters more to Iginla and his family than some rivalry.
All that said, I'm betting on the Rangers. Iginla probably has enough pride left that he'll want a situation where plays in the top six. And it's New York.

Kings or Rags make sense. Canucks don't even have the cap room to sign their own team let alone free agents.

If he went to the Canucks, at least he'd get top 6 minutes. Looking at their line up, they're in a world of hurt. They're lucky the Wild have moved divisions or they'd have a tough time making the playoffs. Even so I think they're ripe to be picked off for the last playoff spot.
I don't think having a home in Kelowna means much though, it's not within commuting distance.

I think he takes a big pay cut and stays in Pittsburgh. 2yrs, 2.5mil/yr.
Yes I think he'd make more elsewhere.

Surprised at how far Iginla has fallen in the eyes of the crew on here.
As a person, he is still the same guy. And a good one from my seat. Family oriented and community oriented.
As a professional player, I think he still has a little left in the tank. He's slow to get going at beginning of season, so I don't think a shortened season gave him enough time to get rolling. He was written off a few seasons ago offensive wise (69 points in 2009-10) and then bounces back with 43 goals and 86 points in 2010-11.
If he tries to be that guy that runs at full energy at all times, hits everything, fights everything, and plays all over the ice like he is that 25 year old power forward again, then he gets hurt, breaks down, and can't play full seasons anymore (think brendan morrow). Opting to try to play 82 games a season and elongate the career.....i would pick my spots like he does too.

Signing with anyone other than the Penguins is a mistake. The Pens has a chance every simgle year to be a cup contender, you just don't jump from team to team (Hawks or Boston) because they did better in one season.
If Iggy was smart he would take a discount and just stay with Sid and the Pens. His chances for a cup there are just as good or better than any other team but the Sid factor should put the Pens as the front runner.

All of Chi, Bos and LA are more complete, and thus better playoff teams. Silly argument to make when the Pens have just shown two years in a row how far from being "cup contenders" they are against the real contenders.

Yes it could mean 100 different things, and also more than just one thing.
However, if Iginla were to sign with the Nucks, one of the things it would mean is in deed that he doesn't at all care about the Flames fans or the organization that supported him for 17 years, or at least that he values all the other reasons he'd have for signing there so much more. He won't be signing with the Nucks ignorant to how that will make his fans in Calgary and the organization feel.
I have no problem with him talking with the Nucks, and I'll wait to see if he signs before I even think about it again, means nothing until he decides. But it would be a slap in the face to this cities hockey fans and the org if he did. He's not just "some player, he's the most iconic Flame of all time". There are two jerseys out of 30 the most iconic Flame of all time should never ware, and the Nucks jersey is one of them, especially not the very next year after his trade. Linden would have never played for the Flames, neither would have Gretzkey.

I don't think my argument is 'silly' at all. Chi, Bos and LA might be more complete right now (arguablly considering the changes we are seeing in Chi and Bos) but I think you are looking at it too narrowly.
If Iggy signs it will be 3-5 years I bet so instead of looking it as 1-2 years he has to look at what his best chances are in the next 3-5.
I'd stick with Pittsburgh.

Frankly, the Flames-Canucks rivalry thing is overblown, and largely confined to this board, as far as I can see. Talk to a sportswriter in Montreal or Detroit or LA and ask him about the great NHL rivalries. He'll mention Philly-Pittsburgh, Montreal-Boston, Pittsburgh-Washington, Toronto-Montreal, Chicago-St.Louis, Detroit-Colorado. Might even mention Calgary-Edmonton. But the Calgary-Vancouver thing is pretty short-lived. We're talking about what - one playoff series ten years ago? It's a big deal to some Calgary fans of a certain age - not coincidentally an age that's over-represented on this board. But it's not much of a thing otherwise.
