I watched it too and, while I thought the number of Canadian kids now in the NHL seemed about right (a few misses but also some guys really blossomed), what stood out for me was the complete lack of ANY Russians from that team being in the NHL now.
Their top guys included Filatov, Petrov and a few others that were very highly touted. When you watch the games, there is no doubt that there is as much talent on the Russian team as the Canadian team.
Remember the 2000 draft in Calgary?
Eight of the 30 first round picks were Russian.
2013?
Eight were taken during the entire draft Sunday.

I have to laugh at the negatives pointing to his skating style. That just seems like scouts reading too deeply into the magic eye poster in the boardroom. Does he get down the ice at a good clip? Yes. Does he have control and power using that style? Yes. Does he look good while flying down the wing? Not really.
Who cares. Similar to the player having an ugly girlfriend.
I know that maybe it's a concern for injury issues down the road but you just can't predict those.
Obviously Poirier rubbed off on some scouts. I think TSN on the national stage kind of made the pick look a lot worse than it was as just after the picks I got a bunch of texts from Oilers fans laughing at the Flames for picking this scrub despite the fact that Poirier was a first round pick in many's eyes. The average viewer doesn't know anything about the prospects so when TSN goes on about "off the board" and "should have picked Shinkaruk" it instills the thought that the pick was a disaster.
On another note boy did Adam Erne ever slide right out of the first round.

IMO it's a sign of the times with all the overscouting, video tape, and statistical evidence that scouts/teams just keep digging and digging in hopes of finding warts. No different in the NFL where if a QB makes all the throws with good velocity and has maybe an unorthodox delivery that's what scouts will focus on. Nevermind the fact that the kid gets the job done, just focus on a delivery which may not be typical and make that a reason to drive his draft grade down.
Yep. It'd be interesting to see their next issue where they grade the teams on their draft. Presumably they'll think we just knocked it out of the park. Sounds like at least one of their scouts was really, really high on Poirier.
The more I read about this player the more I am happy with the pick. Sometimes it's easy to put too much emphasis on player rankings by TSN, ISS, etc... when in reality the best players from the draft are never the ones you expect them to be. Sounds like an interesting pick, lets see how it plays out.

I'm pretty sure I picked Erne for our 28th pick in the voting. Might have even been for the 22nd. Shows what I know
from the Feaster interview on the FAN, two teams tried to trade for #22 in order to draft Poirier; knew he wouldn't be there at 28 or beyond
How did they know that's who they were targeting? I can't really see a GM come up and directly say "we want pick 22 to draft Poirier..." Seems like Feaster is just doing some damage control

Pretty easy. They were scouting Poirier heavily and they know who the scouts from other teams are so it was a simple matter of noticing which team's scouts were there the nights that Poirier dominated and which teams kept watching Poirier closely all season.
It is the same way they knew which teams liked Jankowski last year and therefore how far they could trade down safely and still take him.
There's lots of strategy around these picks. Feaster, Weisbrod and Button are not the simpletons that some make them out to be.

He said that part of the scouting process, is you get to see what other teams are in attendance. When they discussed Poirier he knew that Montreal was scouting a lot of his games. This lines ups with the red line report that Porier was on their list. Feaster did specifically mention Montreal.

Perhaps Feaster made it a requirement to disclose who they were taking at that pick in order to complete a deal... wouldn't surprise me. Why would the flames trade down unless they were confident that their guy was still there a few picks later

Seriously? Damage control?
