Default 'World's largest building' opens in China - Pics may hurt BB

http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/01/travel...rticle_sidebar

Quote:
Located in Chengdu (population 14 million), capital of Sichuan province in southwestern China, the New Century Global Center is the "largest freestanding building in the world," Chinese officials say.

Though the words "world's largest" usually bring to mind an image of a towering skyscraper, this project actually isn't all that tall. But it's certainly big.

At 500 meters long, 400 meters wide and 100 meters high, the 1.7-million-square-meter mega-structure is capable of housing 20 Sydney Opera Houses and almost three times the size of the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
Very few good pictures so far:

The Global Center, which opened June 28, is home to business offices, hotels, movie theaters, shopping malls, a faux Mediterranean village and family-themed attractions such as a water park called Paradise Island.
Shopping malls. Plural. heh.

Eastern countries are so much more creative with their building architecture than out West where it's relatively bland.

Sure... but this isn't an example of that.

I wonder if this will sit empty too, like all the housing developments.

I don't know. It's odd looking but it's definately 'outside of the box'.

Not sure about that, we have the "wavy roof" look with one of the new buildings on the SAIT campus.

Oh and in two days we'll get our first look at what could become the best looking skyscraper in Calgary.

Really? Best looking skyscraper in Calgary isn't a major feat given how boring the Bow looks. Calgary's downtown houses a lot of the newest skyscrapers in Canada but I feel that a lot of them are pretty bland.

I was going to comment on how dated the architecture looked. This looks like something built in the 1970-80s, with those exposed girders and the wavy roof. It looks like a slightly waivier Arthur Erickson building.

I recall being driven past some monstrosity a few months ago, when I was there. Kind of in the suburbs where that large zoo is with the polar bears, I think. (Tianfu Ave).

I am pretty sure the sky is photoshopped in that first picture.

Really.

Things like the Bow and the Peace bridge have stepped the level up, and from all the sources this one is going to go to the next level.

So we are getting there here in ol' Cowtown.

If this boring mall with a wavy roof caused you to wax poetic about Eastern architecture yet you think it's better then the Bow... well I don't know what to tell you.

Looks like the early days of the Jedi Temple or the Emperial/Republic Palace or something like that.

LOL you are off your game today and that's saying something for someone that often doesn't have a lot to add outside of criticizing others. Where did I compare this mall to the Bow?

It's a big mall. Do you have a more creative example of a North American mall? Certainly not west Edmonton.
