Leaked NHLPA memo:

The memo continues: “If RSE does not secure the financing, or if the City Council does not vote to approve the proposed lease, our understanding is that the League would immediately pursue one of several back-up alternatives which likely would entail a prompt relocation of the franchise. While there are several potential cities to which the team might be relocated, it appears that Seattle is the most likely.”
Seems like a conveniently timed leak. Maybe something to put even more pressure on CoG?

No need to worry, the CoG will approve the deal. As SCH noted, you'll have the team next year - and a couple of years after that - but at some point they will indeed likely move on.

I feel for you, I really do. I couldn't imagine having to live through all the uncertainty that has surrounded the Yotes year after year. And, even if/when this deal goes through, you just know the axe blade is hanging...

I wonder if we will hear today or if the firefighter tragedy will bump the vote for later in the week.

During the negotiations that led to the 04 lockout, I was in a tiny, tiny town in south texas doing some work for a guy I met on an flight - updating his computer for his photography work.

I was in a crappy little hotel with absolutely nothing to do after work. I was MISERABLE! My only consolation was turning on ESPN and seeing EJ Hradek (I think that's who it was) telling me that the lockout has been settled. He described how the upcoming season would look, the terms of the agreement, etc.

THANK GOD!! I was so relieved.

Then the next day came the REAL news. The season is cancelled. I'm still pissed at ESPN to this day.

How fricken miserable!!!

That tease and withdraw was just a tiny bit of what the PHO fanbase has been put through the last 4 years. It's obscene.

I'm really sorry for you Bouw... I can't imagine what it feels like. I suspect that you'll get another year or two - maybe even five... take that time to look around and perhaps you'll connect with another team one day. But I wouldn't blame you if this whole scene sours you on the NHL for live.

It's actually just a numb and exhausted feeling, no nerves about it one way or another. I just expect the worst is going to take place tomorrow.

Tuesday's #Glendale City Council meeting is set to start at 7 p.m. Arizona time, but the #Coyotes vote may not come until hours later.

Paul Giblin ‏@PaulGiblinAriz
#Glendale Councilman Gary Sherwood told me a few tweaks could be made to the #Coyotes deal just before Tuesday's vote.

Paul Giblin ‏@PaulGiblinAriz
The #Glendale City Council is going ahead with Tuesday's vote on a proposed #Coyotes deal that the prospective owners say is a deal breaker.

Glendale has been the NHL's patsy for too long

Our View: Council should stand firm on Coyotes counteroffer

Any idea what the process would be if council approves a deal that the ownership group won't agree to? Does council get some ability to modify the approved deal to come to an agreement or are they limited to the exact terms approved at the meeting? If it's the latter this is either incredibly stupid and a waste of time, or it's genius and calls the bluff of the NHL and Renaissance.

I think they should do it for the players. If 23 guys go in there each night and see the barely filled stands I would lack motivation, pride and all those other things. Like last year when they took LA to the semi-finals the crowd was packed and eststic! They lost the series, then in October the opening crowd was 1/3 of the last game they played...They deserve a better more solid fan base if no ones going to show up.

I think that they will revise the deal right before the meeting so it's workable for both sides and vote 4-3 in favour.

I also think that if Glendale gave the NHL the middle finger and voted on their re-worked agreement, that the NHL and RSE would hold their nose and agree to it anyway. Who cares if Glendale has an out clause since everyone on the NHL and RSE's side knows exactly how this is going to end up in five years anyway.

I think there are public notice requirements if they modify the deal they are voting on.

Bouw, I think a deal will be made, and they might stay longer than 5 years too. Congrats.

On Sportsnet Radio at noon they had an Arizona business writer on that said Glendale had to recently close a fire station cause they didn't have the money to keep it open. Creating average transit times to an area of the city of 12 minutes! I really don't understand the priorities of this council or city. I know they don't want to lose money on the arena, make the best of a bad situation, but it just doesn't seem to make sense.

If they Coyotes leave, they could still bring in a junior team or AHL team could they not? If they can't sell out a NHL game, they might as well try with a smaller team. They would still have concerts at the arena too.

And then they wouldn't lose that 50 mill? Or is that gone either way now?

I still think this is going to cost the city in the long run. And I still think they get moved eventually. And perhaps the guy on the radio was a card carrying member of Goldwater or something and had an axe to grind. Still, seems like a waste of money, especially when it may not even work in the long run.

The way I understand it the COG is so screwed that whether the team goes or not they still would need to close the fire hall. They made a huge mistake financing the arena and now their options are gone. I'd guess the Coyotes are there for five more years when the deal is done.

The NHL also backed themselves into a corner by sending two teams to the East so it's difficult to move the team to QC and now their only options are stay or move to Seattle and Seattle isn't ready for them.

Council will be influenced by the overall, broad net cash flow picture, not just today but also into the future.

That would include potential loss of tax revenue or increase in tax revenue from the presence or absence of the team. How does the presence or absence of the team influence further development in the area and how does that also translate into enhanced long term, permanent, cash flow for the city? Those are things not directly contained in the lease or arena management issues, but they do relate to the long term serviceability of the debt carried for the original arena development.

Municipalities declare bankruptcy occasionally. This city deserves it for building a white elephant it couldn't afford, a good lesson for cities everywhere.

But this particular council is dealing with today, not the mistakes of of another council yesterday. The lease is part of it, but there are other, bigger picture components that will go into its decision tonight.

It looks like a deal will be struck.

Realignment is a non issue. Tampa/Florida in the Central, Colorado back to the Pacific. Done.

Junior isn't an option given the geography. Besides, US junior teams don't draw anything close to what we are used to in Calgary. AHL is probably a given. But, you're trading a posted average of 13k a night for a posted average of 5k a night, at lower ticket prices, and therefore lower rent. The city wouldn't have to subsidize the team much, if at all, but it would get only peanuts back in revenue. Is that better than the current proposal? No idea.

As Vulcan says though, Glendale screwed itself no matter how this resolves.

Re-alignment would need the PA to vote on it. Too late for that and a new schedule so it's too late for QC, if QC was ever an alternative. For some reason I don't think it was.
