Some people calling or inserting Monahan ahead of Stajan or even Backlund reaaally need to step back for a second.
NHL ready has a lot of implications just like how Horak is considered to be oh so close to NHL ready. Let's just take a step back and see how this kid adapts to the big league.

I like Vinny on a 3 year deal. By then, we will know what we have with Monahan and Janko.

One of them should be ready to take over 1st line duties (if that is their ceiling), by then.

Really, I don't think it is the end of the world if Stajan and Backs share 1C duties this year either. It's not like we're contending, and I'd say they are both fighting for their futures.

Totally agree. At this point, being that Knight has 4 years of development playing against men, he's probably the more NHL ready of the 2. Backlund, Stajan, Knight, Reinhart/Jones is probably the depth chart, barring any signings or trades. Monahan is going to have a hell of a camp to steal a top 9 job. If he does, great, but lets not throw lofty expectations on the kids shoulders yet.

Some guys are just ready to make the step who are 18- Iggy, Toews, etc, some are not. Let's see how he does in training camp. If he looks good, give him pre-season and if he still looks good, give him another 6-8 games during the regular season. If he still looks good, keep him and if he needs more work, send him to the farm to brush up.

Unless something has changed in the latest CBA, he can't be sent to the farm, only back to Junior.

It would be nice if he could but that's not the way it works...

Feaster was quoted in saying that Monahan will be signed to an entry level right away- so we don't have to worry about juniors.

He's too young to go to the AHL

Technically, his age isn't the problem. There are 18 year olds that play in the AHL.

It's that there is an agreement in place where players whose rights are held by a CHL team cannot play in the AHL. The Flames could potentially ask Ottawa to relinquish his rights, but they are under no obligation to do so.

But if he is signed to an entry level contract after being drafted, doesn't Ottawa relinquish those rights ?

Signing him to an entry-level deal has no bearing in whether he will play in Junior next year again or not.

I wasn't aware of this. Now considering that he played on a really crappy Ottawa team, does anyone see any advantage to sending him back there ? I know I don't, and I would be surprised if the Flames do either. I'm sure the Flames will do something about getting him out of Ottawa one way or another.

Ottawa could trade him this summer to a team that would be a contender, knowing that he won't be in Ottawa for too much longer anyways. Hopefully if he doesn't make the Flames out of camp this is what happens, it would be nice for him to get some time on a winning team and see what he could do with some talent on his line.

I think he'll be given every opportunity make the team in camp. However, if he goes back to the ohl I would put the chances at 50/50 he ends up with the London Knights. They host the Memorial Cup this year and there were already all kinds of rumours that he'd be traded here last year. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world than a guaranteed Memorial Cup birth and in all likelihood an OHL championship

It's NHL or juniors, every CHL prospect follows the same rule. Usually the only 18-19 year olds in the AHL are from overseas, but the majority of them go back home until theyre NHL-ready

Ottawa would never just relinquish their best player contract, if for whatever reason the Flames had an issue with him playing for the 67s then I suppose they could request he be traded elsewhere. But they wouldn't just give up their biggest asset for no reason, it's never happened before

CHL players sign a sliding ELC. If he plays more than 9 games with the big club, a year of his contract is burned. If not (if he plays in the CHL), his contract slides and a year is not used up.

No. Again, Ottawa could allow it but I can't think of any examples of this happening.

Forgive my ignorance thing here, but, is this just a CHL thing ? or does this also apply to the QMJHL and ECHL ?
