I think, like having Iginla on the PK, it will be good for their game.
It would surprise me if Horvat isn't pencilled into their lineup. I think part of the reason for drafting him vs. say any of the others that went 10-14 is that ability to be somewhat reliable as an NHLer as soon as possible.
Canucks are desperate for highly effective ELC contracts to keep competitive. After getting a taste of Schroeder and Kassian last year, I think they are pretty desperate to find a guy who could contribute solid minutes for them in a depth role.
We'll have to see what happens with the rest of their contracts though.
|
I think 2 of Horvat, Gaunce, and Shinkaruk are in the lineup next season
like you said they need the ELCs next year (once the cap goes up after not an issue) and with 2 of the above plus Kassian and Jensen that gives them 4 possible top 9 forwards on the cheap

Ya that I can completely see
Someone else said it but if you put Nichushkin with the Sedins next year you have your calder winner
the one thing that kind of worked out (and there's no way this could have been guessed) is Shinkaruk being available at 24 allowed them to get a sniper there, and they needed a center in the first round

I actually agree that the Canucks got more than they deserved in trading Schneider to NJ. Schneider only had a couple of good season with the Canucks and to get early first round for him was a bit overpayment for him as far as I am concerned. As for not picking Nichuskin, i think the reasoning was they want to pick a player who they think will have a chance to suit up for the team next season. Nichuskin might be ready and talented than Horvat but the guy is under contract with the KHL. If the guy is not under contract with the KHL, I would think he would be one of the Top 5 pick.
Anyways I just can't wait for the season to see how much mess Gillis did for this team. He traded a goalie who's so excited to play goal for them and kept the guy who's overpaid and was resigned to play somewhere other than Vancouver in the next few season. I am not even sure Torts and Gillis ill co-exist so i am guessing once the Canucks goes into a funk this season, we will say bye-bye to Gillis.

Gaunce is a pretty mediocre prospect. If he cracks the Canucks roster that will be telling of their team depth.

I think they will patch things up and Luongo will start for Vancouver, but what would the Canucks do if he wasn't back? Most of the good goalies on the market re-signed and Vancouver has Lack remaining.

They signed that Sweedish goaltender Joacim Eriksson but he's kind of an unknown. I think Luongo will play for them as he doesn't really have any other option outside of holding out and not getting paid. I think the real problem is when he has a stretch when he struggles. Over the past few years when he struggled they just put in Schneider and now they don't have that security blanket and if Luongo has a stretch where he plays poor it will get pretty ugly with fans and media. I simply don't see this ending well for either side. IMO the Canucks had to do something this weekend but this was the worst case scenario of all their options and keeping both goaltenders wasn't an option.

The drama in Vancouver with Luongo will be awesome to watch. It will be interesting to see any Luongo interviews, anyone find any since the trade yesterday?

Decent pick in Horvat, not the best player available but the Canuck's needed a center. Thought both first round picks were good but the return for Schneider was not what they were hoping for.
Lack is still injured I believe and is not available to start the year. Hip surgery I believe. The new goalie is a complete unknown, in the Berra, Ramo area. Could be good could wash out.
I have no doubt that Luongo is a professional and will honour his contract but make no mistake, he wants out of Vancouver and has for awhile. The issues go farther back than Schneider getting his contract and named #1. If he sticks around I cannot see him playing out his contract. Nice big fat cap hit to the Canuck's when he retires...

his ceiling isn't high (2nd line max) but he could be a decent 3rd line guy next year if his skating improves a bit

there was some Canucks fans that we asked if they heard the news Schneider was traded for the 9th pick and they got all bent that VAN only got a 9th round pick back for Schneider. "WHAT"
We had a good laugh watching them get mad at their own blunder.
9th round
I thought that VAN made a smart pick with Horvat.
Horvat will be a good NHL player but i'm sure most Van fans would admit they assumed that Schneider would have garnered a player or solid prospect coming back with the 9th pick.

Canuck fans wouldn't be Canuck fans if they weren't in this thread about Horvat telling us why he's as good as Monahan. I'm sure they believe deep down he's better too. It's in their genetic Canuckle makeup to be this way

it will be fun when things go even a bit 'pear-shaped' with luongo having a bad stretch, schneider doing ok on a usually defensively strong devils team, and torterella doing his thing to appease the media.
Should be a fun shipwreck of a season for the canucks.

Bill Waters on twitter is saying that the reason Schneider was traded is due to off ice issues, not financial or goaltending issues.

Nichushkin has no KHL contract and will very likely be playing in the NHL this season.

Know someone who golfed with a person in Canucks management over the weekend. Gillis and the management team are not on the same page right now.

I am glad someone called Watters on it...

The point is that tossing "off ice issues" causally about a player is a pretty ####ty thing to do in general.
