If he earns a spot in camp he should stay. But if in less than 10 games it's clear he needs some work I have no problem sending him back to junior. The only thing is if Ottawa is supposed to stink next year I think it's a waste then to send him back unless he gets traded to a better team.

I said of he looks like a legit NHLer he should stay. But if he's borderline and we're nowhere near competing, what would be the point of burning a year off his ELC? Successful rebuilds have happened when teams have won the cup while their youngest/best players are still on their ELC.

Feaster never actually said that...it kind of just got turned into that after many games of telephone on CP. Readiness was a consideration for the team, but nobody ever went that far to say they only want someone who can step in.

I think ideally Sean goes back to the OHL and gets traded to a Memorial Cup contender where he can lead a team in the playoffs, and be part of a winning group. Even if he's somewhat ready now, I'd rather the Flames be patient with him this year, and not burn a year of his ELC, just because we want things to happen fast.

He makes the team we have a logjam of mid level centres. Stajan , backlund, knight, monahan, bouma, and Reinhardt still fighting too. Then there is a guy like Byron. Who slides to wing, who doesn't make the cut and who is off the team? I'm really interested to see but I just don't want monahan to waste a year pluggin the fourth line, if he makes it he needs substantial ice time

I would love to see him play in Calgary but this team is going to be bad next year and it is probably best to have him go back to junior for a year and come in for the 2014/15 season.

He should be dealt if he does go back to Ottawa so a chance to compete for a title and Memorial Cup should be good for him.

I only want him on the Flames if he is somewhat ready and there is legit top 9 space for him.

Right now Stajan, Backlund have 2/3 spots...barring trades. Knight might have the other or if the Flames manage to snag VL.

Long story short...they need to look at offloading Stajan.

It is highly unlikely that he is better than Backlund or Stajan in October. If he shows that he is - then great.

I think it's more likely that he gets a 9 game tryout. And that is what I would prefer. Spending a year rocking the CHL, being one of the best players, being a leader, playing in the WJCs, and getting playoff experience (assuming he is traded) would be good for him.

Then join the NHL when he is one year older, stronger, and more confident.

Interesting that Button said he wanted to stay with the 67s last year though, because I would think that if the Flames sent him down, they would ask/encourage the 67s to trade him to a contender.

He has over 200 games at the Junior level if you count playoffs, so that there likely makes him a good candidate to move up to the next level. If he shows up to camp with 200 pounds on his frame and is in good condition, I think he'll get his 9 games at the start of the season. At that point if he does go back to Junior, than I think the 67's would look to move him just after the World Juniors.

He may not have the experience that Stajan or Backlund do, but he was a 6 overall pick so he probably his skill sets that they don't.

No question about that (though Backlund is talented as well), but the question is: are those skill sets better served continuing to develop for another year or to be challenged against men?

Both the flames and the 67's will be bottom dwellers next year. Have to wonder whether his learning might have saturated in the OHL or is close to it. If you think not, then I think you send him there. If you do then there's no point and you might as well play him with the big club.

Ideally I'd prefer if he got traded within the OHL, in order to play with a contending team in there.

He has been talked about as one of the more NHL ready prospects for sometime. I think he will have every opportunity to make the flames and expect him to be in Calgary for at least 9 games likely the whole year

If Calgary wants to get better, then they need to actually utilize the pieces they are accumulating. If the roster is going to stay the same as last year, we can expect the results to be the same. The following setup inserts a new body on every line.

Baertschi - Backlund - Jones
Hudler - Knight - Cammalleri
Glencross - Monahan - Stempniak
Bouma - Stajan - Jackman

I could see this being the lines on opening night, barring any further deals. What's essential here though, is that if they bring in anyone, then someone has to go.

They would already have to demote Reinhart and Horak to the Heat again with this roster, which I don't like one bit. Ideally, Cammalleri, Glencross, Stajan and Jackman are all traded.

Didn't TSN have his NHL ETA as next year?

He should only be on the team if he deserves it, not because Feaster wants the shiny new coin to show the fans. I have no problem if he goes back to Jr's.

Question: If he makes the team, can they still loan him out for the World Jr's? I think they can, but not quite sure.

Also Horak deserves to be on the team next year and right now i don't see a spot for him.

Yes, he can still play in the WJC if the Flames let him go.

It is all about puck possession. If the training staff think he will get enough in the NHL, he might stick around. Otherwise, no harm having him play in Ottawa and develop even more. The more guys developing the better draft we have next year!

I want to see him make the team next season. He's got the right attitude about it, and seems to be beaming with confidence. HAving said that, people will need to temper their expectations for him. He will be given every chance to succeed, but I wouldn't be surprised if he is sent back down. Either way, I will be very happy to see him in flames' silks come fall.

I expect that Backlund, Stajan, and Knight are all better than him right now.

And there's no point in having him on the 4th line between McGrattan and Jackman (or whichever replacement-level retreads they have).

Knight is a face-off ace, so there's no point in moving him to wing, and I'd like to see Monohan stay at C at the NHL level as well.

So juniors it is, then.

If Sam Gagner can make the show as an undersized pivot after his draft then Monahan could too. There's definitely a spot available.
