He was terrible, in Junior...years later he showed up in the NHL somehow. So you just never know. I would have eaten buckets of pubes on bets had I been asked if Boogaard would ever make the NHL.

fair enough. I just think it's ridiculous to use this thread for mockery and outrage when most of us haven't seen him play and haven't heard the Flames' reasoning about the pick. And while I appreciate input from guys that have actually seen him, I just can't take posts seriously that say he is "bad at the game of hockey" ... bad hockey players don't get drafted in the 3rd round. But maybe I'm just an overly positive guy after all ...
But I can see a pattern here with our picks ... excitement, meltdown, excitement, meltdown. We can get excited for #135!

His scoring stats are meaningless to me. Hell, Regehr has only 10 points in his last 130 games. Sounds like he took a giant leap forward from last year to this. Obviously a project, and likely a long term one. Hopefully he can develop.

Once you get past the first two rounds you roll the dice with picks. Giant players can take longer to develop as they get used to their size. Maybe you luck out and he becomes a big mean top 6 d-man. At minimum he'll be able to fill the McGratton/Godard type role at some point you aren't trading assets to land guys like that.

Byfuglien did not show much NHL possibilities in Prince Albert.
If the guy was a football player at 6-7 241 at age 17 no one would assume that he was non-athletic......and would always be slow.

Meh... biggest downside in grabbing him was Feaster not trading down. Doesn't seem like this guy would have been targeted quickly after his pick.
This is where the Flames' development program goes to work. Wouldn't expect to see him in the NHL until at least 3 years if everything goes very well. I think the Flames pick him up and incubate him for the next couple of years in junior, and then for a few more on the Heat.
Sounds like he developed a lot from one year to the next, and sounds like he needs loads more development. I really think this is the type of pick you make trying to bat one out of the stadium. Should have traded down, however, but I don't hate it too much. Hopefully Flames development makes something out of him.
Btw - 241 lbs already. Is he in poor condition, or is he fairly developed? Yes, he is big - but he is still heavy for his age. Anyone know?

"1. Keegan Kanzig — If you’re anywhere near his vicinity when he snaps, you’re in mortal danger. Try to avoid making eye contact. Was a 17 year-old just destroying the toughest 19 year-olds in the Dub."
From ISS, ranked 74th:
"An absolute monster on the backend, Kanzig is a physically intimidating player who has really learned how to use his natural physical gifts to his advantage. He is no stranger to the rough stuff and is always happy to impose his physical will on opponents. He is a decent skater for his size, controls the net front area well, but make no mistake, his appeal is all about physicality and intimidation. He has a big shot but very rarely is able to get it off and is not the type of player you want handling the puck for too long. He has decent defensive instincts and is a nice weapon to have at your disposal when the game turns nasty."
|
Wait a second? Did ISS have KK ranked ahead of Poirier?
Do you have a subscription? Can you post the ISS Poirier submission?

This makes more sense. Apparently Feaster found a loophole in the CBA that allows him to use NHL draft picks in the CFL. Welcome to the Stampeders KK

Klimchuk was #13 on the Flames list, and that was 54 posts before this one.

Make no mistake if you think he is the next Chara, he is not.
I really hate to write this because not only is he a Royal, but now a flame, but if he does not improve his skating, i will be surprised if he makes the NHL.

Well obviously anyone that projected to be a Chara would be a top 5 pick not a 3rd rounder.

Is it any more ridiculous that the people who like the pick, haven't for the most part seen him either?
I get that a lot of fans think when someone new is acquired/drafted/whatever, the tendency (for any group of fans of any team) is to try to look at the bright side.
But not everyone is required to.
If some posters who have never seen him play can judge a pick as good or promising based on some scouting reports and a some youtube videos, then surely a separate group can also just a pick as bad or wasted based on the same information.
Either way, neither group will be proven right for a while. But there seems to be a lot of dismissing of posters who don't like certain picks when they have just as much information as posters who do like.

Yes, but the Knights don't trade young guys that are going to be good. See Remi Elie. Drafted 40th overall, was ranked to go in the 4th round.

Todd Button says Flames believe he is an intelligent player and understands the game well.
At the training camp on Abbotsford last fall he said lot of Flames hockey people went to watch him including pro scouts

i watched Chara in the WHL and i didn't think he would ever make the NHL. I am no scout, but i have to think he growing that fast makes it very difficult to be a smooth/coordinated athlete. gotta hope he gets more comfortable and improves his skating over the next couple of years.
side note: he isn't that good of a fighter imo.
