Might not have been a toss up though. Perhaps Zykov has more holes in his game compared to Klimchuk.

Just thinking out loud.

Who knows really, not a mind reader but Zykov has been questioned about his skating.

From Kyle Woodlief USA Today: "Offensively skilled sniper with a fabulous release around the slot. Has great hands to receive and snap off shots all in the same mo#tion. Never stops the puck, it's just off his blade immediately before defenders can reach him or goalies can get set. Also has pinpoint ac#curacy to bury chances. So intelligent and instinctive in the offensive end, and is able to read off any linemates he's paired with. Not big, but added leg strength"

I suspect that's exactly it. To me they're a toss-up but to the Flames they weren't. We'll see!

got too many left wingers. Should've picked up another centerman either with their 22nd pick or this pick. Anyway, kind of scratching my head with the 22nd pick.

Listening to his interview on the Fan and he mentions he recently graduated from Dr. E. P. Scarlett. Another reason for me to like him.

Zykov slipped to 37 so the Flames weren't the only team that had some question marks. Maybe he didn't interview well? I was never on that bandwagon anyway as Mantha was the guy I wanted at 22 but that wasn't in the cards. Klimchuk is a good prospect.

Did our good friend Button have his shot rated as a 3/5 when everyone else is pretty much saying he's as good a shooter as there is in the WHL.

Listening to his interview on the Fan and he mentions he recently graduated from Dr. E.P. Scarlett, while I graduated from there over a decade ago. Another reason to stop paying attention to any info about NHL prospects that relates to how young they are and how old I am.

Klimchuk was 10th in the Wingate power test and tied for 9th in the vertical jump at the combine

2001 for me, goodness. Good to see another scarlett grad drafted.... but more importantly another calgary buffalos alumni. Meanwhile shinkaruk (royals alumni) going to vancouver is just perfect as I can continue to cheer against him.

Drafting purely based on organizational need is not a good strategy. Yes, Monahan fills a need but he was also arguably the BPA at that pick as well. So what if we have a glut of LW's. If they develop into NHL caliber players they can always be traded for a more pressing need or some can always be trained to play their off-wing. Just because we're weak on the right side positionally, you shouldn't draft a lesser player than someone else just because he's a true RW. We have lots of LW's right now, but if we had the 3rd pick do you not draft Drouin because we already have enough LW's. BPA at the draft, always.

When I went to Scarlett, it hadn't even been built yet. It was a field full of gopher holes, and I was the head gopher. And I had to tunnel uphill both ways, in the snow, in July.

“To get drafted is one thing,” said Klimchuk, a product of the Calgary Buffaloes program, “but to get drafted by my hometown team is something that I was kind of hoping for. I’m very, very excited that my name got called.
Quote:
“It was pretty nerve-racking. I wanted to go as high as possible, but I wanted to go to a very good team as well. I saw the 28th pick come up. I was waiting for a bit and I was pretty nervous.”
Quote:
“Just keep working hard. Don’t change my game too much. Just improve in all areas of my game — whether that’s strength or skating or anything like that. Don’t get complacent and keep working hard.”
Quote:
“I got a good chance to play in a lot of different opportunities with a lot of different players,” Klimchuk said. “I wasn’t just playing one role all year, I was playing penalty kill, power play, shutdown minutes, and contributing offensively. Just a chance to play against top players every night was something that helped me develop a lot.
Quote:
“I take pride in putting the puck in the net, but I’ve come into a pretty good two-way game.”
