Saw him play alot this year, probably one of the worst hockey players in the dub. Maybe he'll be an NHL Goon.

I think he's better than Smith and could probably beat Butler out of a spot if Butler wasn't Feaster's guy.

I think it's pretty clear that he was picked because he has the same initials as Ken King. More meddling from the higher ups I tell you.

Odds are all the picks in the 3rd round or later won't be in the NHL for at least 2 more years. We will have to wait and see about KK...
(I just hope his middle name isn't Ken)

By the way, defensemen generally take 3-4 years to fully develop.

Or, in this case, probably a lifetime. . . .

The thing I don't get is why they couldn't have traded down and got a 5th or something if they were going to take him. It's not like anyone else was going to take him in the 3rd round.

Perhaps a bit - they played the Royals two years straight in the playoffs so seen him when he's at his worst - up against a more skilled team that made him look stupid a lot.

He isn't disciplined, doesn't have the puck skills, smarts or foot speed to keep up. It's not a typical Weisbrod pick - the Flames have been targetting guys with high hockey IQ's and Kanzig is the polar opposite of that.

In the interst of full disclosure, a Rockets STH currently so between that and going to up to Kamloops now and then to catch a game, have seen Kanzig a lot in the past two years. A bit biased against him? Maybe a tad...but don't have the grudging respect for him that would have against a good rival player.

He's a pylon. Perhaps the Flames see something that no one else does. Time will tell.

Have to agree with this. Like i said in another post, i have seen him live in Victoria many times and there really should be no reason for him to be a 3rd round pick. Even if he is not available with the next pick, it would not have been the end of the world.

Fair enough.

The only thing that sort of seems odd is that Feaster, Weisbrod et al. are all about high Hockey IQ, high character guys. Makes me wonder if this kid's got those traits?

EDIT - beaten to this point by Red John.

Yeah I have a hunch that's not going to happen. Lets focus on him simply being able to crack an NHL lineup one day and leave the Chara comparisons for another day.

Defensive defensemen tend to be pretty marginal players even if they do pan out. You can typically grab 'em as cheap UFAs, so not need to draft 'em. Bad pick.

It's not that at all. It's not liking the fact that they basically flushed this pick down the toilet that annoys me. Taking a slow defenseman with no offense to speak of that might be a 5-6 guy maybe is kind of pointless, especially when there were about 5-10 guys available that had legit upside to them.

I would've easily taken any of Cammarata, Janmark-Nylen, Slepyshev, Bjorkstrand, or Saros with that pick and been fine with it. Each of them could possibly be an NHLer. Kanzig is the defensive version of Brian McGrattan. Woo.

Kanzig says he is only 6'5'' not 6'7'' as listed by the NHL.
