He is, and their GM could have gotten it. But he chose not to.

Gillis could have the biggest ego in the league.

He got greedy and missed out on Luongo, rather than admitting the contract was a mistake and buying him out or dumping him for nothing he chooses to trade the younger No. 1 who actually wanted to be there.

Then uses the draft pick on a guy who projects as a 3rd liner.

Now you somehow have to get Luongo happy to stay in a place he wanted to leave.

Yikes.

I don't think you can overemphasize the mess this is going to be for Vancouver. How do you tell a guy you're done with him, then expect it too all be forgotten?

Luongo might not want to go back for bit, but a new coach and the fact that he has always been popular in the room will make it a non-issue 1 week in to the season

dont get the big deal about not calling him

he didn't get traded

Definitely benefited from the division, not so much the defense. Garrison was good this year and Hamhuis has been for a couple, but over time the goaltending there has been sitting behind two massive gaffe machines in Edler and Bieksa. Not to mention Ballard when he wasn't in the press box. That's not exactly a Phoenix Coyotes situtation.

As far as Luongo goes I have no idea what to expect there... he really rehabilitated his relationship with fans using his twitter account over the past year. He did sign a contract and doesn't seem like the type to hold out. My guess is he says all the right things to the media and gets back in the net, but who the hell knows at this point.

LOL funny how all the clown show GM's reside in the NW division. Just when I think it can't get any worse than the Alberta teams Gillis pokes his greasy head in front of the camera.

Seriously. I was SURE when they announced the trade that they did it at the last minute because Nichuskin was still on the table. Then they draft Horvat. Don't get me wrong - I think Horvat will be a very good centre in the league and is a can't miss pick. Basically I think there is nothing really to choose from between Horvat and Monahan at this point. But the Flames had to pick an NHL quality centre who can play in the top 6. They had an organizational need... no, an organizational desperation. The Canucks passed on a lottery-pick-quality talent to draft a guy who projected around 10-12.

Really, given the historical ineptitude of the Oilers, the ridiculous incompetence displayed by Feaster this year, and now the conclusion of this nonsensical goaltending saga in Vancouver, the western Canadian teams really need to be considered the joke of the league at this point.

Scary but true.

If this turns out well for the Canucks, it will be in spite of Gillis and the mess he created.

Hahaha Luongo is pissed. Assumed he was gone, and the Canucks never contacted him beforehand about the trade. What a mess, especially if the trade has been done since last night.

I am relieved that Nichushkin will not be having a Calder season on a line with the Sedins.

Schnieder says Gillis told him that Lamorillo swore him to secrecy on it getting outside their inner circles, wanted to be able to make a splace since the draft was in NJ and not have it leak earlier I imagine

Pierre LeBrun ‏@Real_ESPNLeBrun 41s
Aquilini is there now. Don't think he's hooked up with Luongo though yet. Obviously wants to smooth things over

Pierre LeBrun ‏@Real_ESPNLeBrun 1m
Once deal was agreed on last night, Canucks owner Francisco Aquilini decided to fly to Florida this morning to talk to Luongo. (con"t)
