Darren Haynes thinks the Flames take Lindholm. But if the Flames were willing to gamble on Nichushkin could see them make that pick too. But does not think they should gamble.

Isn't close to NHL ready.
No chance given what Feaster has said.

Ooops. thought it was Nichushkin we were talking about. Uhhh, for Monahan it was his skating and the idea that he wasn't driving the bus so to speak in Ottawa but racking up points along for the ride. Compete level is high but doesn't think he has the total package for the unenviable task of being the face of all hope in a re-build like calgary. Being shy in the face of what will be a lot of pressure in Calgary has haynes thinking he might not be able to handle it.

I'm guessing that original post meant Nichushkin?
If so, I agree.

I want Nichushkin personally. Him and Jones on the right side makes this team considerably bigger in the top 6. That's my hope is we at least keep the 6th and that we take a gamble on Nichushkin simply because we can offer what he desires at the NHL level.

Where is this doubt over Monahan coming from? Seriously.
It's like this has come out of thin air. No mention of this "not driving the bus, racking up points" during the season or at season's end. As well as interviews with NHL top scouts and his coach.
So these weaknesses were just remembered now, a day or two before the draft?
Sounds like dirty Edmonton spies, trying to turn us off him.

They weren't really doubts, he simply said that because he played on a bad team, they didn't have an opportunity to see him play as much as they would have liked. He hasn't played a game since March. The one thing that keeps coming up is his skating, which I haven't seen any evidence of in his highlight reels, so tough to call that one.

I know you can't draft for position but...
The Flames have been weak at C for 2 decades. This draft is the strongest for Cs ever.
Ever.
If the Flames don't come away with a C and instead take a Russian winger...

He was driving the bus in Ottawa. Monahan had 78 points. Ottawa scored 208 goals. So Monahan was in on 37.5% of Ottawa's offense and that was with missing 10 games due to suspension. Next highest scoring player on the team? 51 points. Pretty clear that Monahan was one of their sole offensive threats.
To compare Halifax scored 347 goals with Drouin scoring 105 points for 30% of his team's offense. MacKinnon had 75 points for 22% of his team's offense. That said MacKinnon did have an injury and both players missed a bit of time due to the World Juniors.
Lindholm had 30 points on Brynas who scored 123 goals. That is 24% of his team's offense that he was in on. But in a men's league so more impressive perhaps.
Barkov had 48 points on Tappara who scored 173 goals. That is 28% of his team's offense. Very impressive.

One thing that really worries me with Monahan is that something around 44 of his 78 points came on the powerplay. Only 34 even-strength/shorthanded points.

It's not like Nichushkin will be the only elite player available at our pick. I think the guys we're picking from are so close that if the Flames want they can pick by position.

Shouldn't that be expected? He was on the worst team in the league. So likely one of the worst 5 on 5 teams in the league. Hard to score 5 on 5 when you only have 1 or 2 offensive threats.
Given the team Monahan played for I think the high % of PP points isn't particularly concerning. I think it's expected given how horrible his team was.
