Really? Like "Nazi Germany"? FFS High River.
http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/al...851/story.html
RCMP revealed Thursday that officers have seized a “substantial amount” of firearms from homes in the evacuated town of High River.
The guns will be returned to owners after residents are allowed back in town and they provide proof of ownership, Topham added.
“What’s next? Tear gas?” shouted one resident.
“It’s just like Nazi Germany, just taking orders,” shouted another.
“This is the reason the U.S. has the right to bear arms,” said Charles Timpano, pointing to the group of Mounties.

Sounds like my building is finally up and running, looks like I get to go home tonight.
Tried to go back to work today but was stuck in the south, talk about feeling useless. Maybe I can earn some money tomorrow? lol!

Have a friend who baked a ton of goods to hand out to people and bought juice boxes etc to go help people that were needy.
Any idea where she should go with these supplies? Heard that bowness was a scary toxic mess and it wasn't really safe for a person to go down there - so looking for a place that's safe to wander down to but still have people needing snacks. (for tomorrow)
thanks

I'm somewhat shocked that the comments on that article are generally in agreement with the premise of the article.
I think that tensions are extremely high, much higher than we can possibly imagine in the city.

I think it is a 200-300 vocal minority. There is roughly 12,000 in High River.

Well . . . . among that small group of people at the barricade relative to the overall population of 13,000 tensions are high.
The High River people I've talked to over the last few days are chilling pretty easy, making plans for renting or buying trailers as temporary shelters, setting up quarters elsewhere, setting up alternative business arrangements. They'd like to see what happened, of course, but they're not harassing cops at barricades.
I was in Black Diamond today, huge equipment moving into town to get their bridge up and running, businesses just got debit/credit back this aft and, while not a lot of folks wandering around, there are a lot of government agencies scurrying about.
I live along highway 549 and that's turned into a traffic clogged freeway with all the traffic that can't go through Black Diamond.

Siksika was hit really hard and the news barely covered that. I can get some information about where to go, if she'd consider taking it out there, to their evac centre. They need so much help right now.
As an aside, I will be in the city tomorrow as my daughter is getting a bone scan in the morning. I could always meet her somewhere and pick stuff up, if she'd consider sending it out to Siksika, and I could run it out there after we're done with the bone scan - it's not as far a trip for me, from my house.

I suspect the majority of people you've talked to weren't aware that the RCMP were seizing personal property while they were ostensibly searching houses for *people* to rescue. If it were the right thing to do, would they have been attempting to keep it quiet, or would they have been bragging about it? "Saving lives! Saving pets! Keeping your guns safe!" The RCs didn't pull out a *spike belt*, either, until just today. Another sign that they don't see us, the unwashed masses, as people to be helped, but rather as a "problem" to be managed. (Or a problem to be avoided, in the case of the people who refused to leave town).
100 people angry enough to make the trip from their shelters to the barricades is a pretty big number. For every one of them, there are probably many others who have chosen to contain their anger, for whatever reason. But every container has a limit.
Let me just say that if tomorrow's re-entry plan announcement doesn't happen as promised, or contains timelines any longer than "Sunday" for the start of re-entry in some form or another, I think we're going to start seeing violence and arrests at the barricades within 24 hours.
Just my opinion, of course.

Reason: Not 300 people protesting...300 left in town! Duh. More like 100 protesting today.

This is right up there on the 'Stupidest Posts I've Ever Read' list. Yes, the fact that the RCMP are taking guns out of uninhabited structures as opposed to leaving them there for anyone who comes on through in the night to take is a sure sign of tyranny. I mean in a properly functioning society guns are just left lying about for people to pick up and use as they will. It's not as if stolen guns are used in the commission of crime, they are quite obviously used for hunting, and legal hunting at that.

Tell me where you live and I'll come right over to search your house when you're not home. You can nominate me for the "stupidest post" award if you want, but people like me--who give a rat's ass about freedom and personal rights--are the only thing protecting people like you from the type of authoritarianism that is the inevitable result of unchecked state power.

What is the RCMPs big goal here? Does the average RCMP officer want to take the town over before getting off work and spending time with his family?
Why are they not allowing people into their houses? Power trip?
You people never think these things through...

It may not be a conspiracy, but it also isn't right. Sure- if they find a gun sitting on the kitchen table, they might want to secure it. But this does seem a little excessive to me.
What I don't get is why authorities can't try to meet the residents part way? Maybe tell the Alderside refugees they can select X number of people to go into town accompanied. These people may have lost everything they own in the world. Both sentimental items and expensive items. Some people stand to lose 100's of thousands of dollars. Others had to fight to get them to check in on pets.
I get that there are risks to allowing people into the town. As suggested earlier, make the people sign a waiver saying they understand the risks.
