Yeah it was only based on this past year. I completely disagree since Letang >> Martin. Rossi had a piece about it this week.

He's not a free agent. He still has one year on his contract and if he is traded now he can get an 8 year deal with his new team.

Does he not have to play the entire year for the new team? Not sure how the new team would feel about spending the assets to acquire Letang only to give him the chance to leave at the end of the year.

Yeah I don't know... almost feels like his ego needs to be satisfied by having a larger cap hit than Ryan Suter...

Letang is one of my favorite players to watch...but I think he's going to end up regretting turning down this offer... It's very risky as the Penguins could just keep him and trade him during the season...but if he's pouting and underperforming, he'll be gettin offered a lot less.

If he is traded before next season starts his contract becomes the property of the new team, and they can negotiate and RESIGN him to an extension. I don't think they can sign him to an extension until after July 5th, same as Pittsburgh can't, but they would have the right after that date.

But thats just like the old rules except with a max length. I thought the new rule was that you could only get an 8 year deal if you are with the original team?

8 years if you resign with your team and max of 7 years if you leave to a new team as a UFA.

Wideman has said he'd be happy to stick around and help bring the young guys up. I think you gotta try to hold on to quality vets that are willing and happy to do that. He earned his pay last year too, I hope he stays.

Heard Friedman say earlier that Letang was pretty pissed with how the Penguins treated him after they lost to Boston, and left him out to dry to take much of the blame for their losses. Also wasn't too happy that Paul Martin was seen as the better player this year by the Penguins in the playoffs. So ya maybe at this point he pretty much just wants to go do another team, and is just forcing Pittsburgh to increase his value to another team. So maybe it will be another Jordan Staal situation where he'll sign for the same contract elsewhere.

Although even as a Letang fan I think 7 million per year is pretty damn fair, especially if he wants to play for perennial contender in Pittsburgh.

Love it, go Letang! These #######s deserve some bad karma, they've been lucky for far too long.

Boston figured out Letang pretty easy when he has to defend. His ego has got the best of him.
Remove him from Sid, Malkin and that PP and see how his point production falls off by 20 pts. 7m, 7.5m, 7.75m or 8m silly money

He is one of seven clear cut #1 D in the NHL ( pp qbs who makes the players around him better offensively, even strength and on the PP ). They are an extremely rare commodity. Rarer than the 1C.

He is worth a lot.
