If you ever need to know how Deerfoot is doing, Google Maps is your best bet to see. It's fairly accurate. (Just turn on the traffic layer)

CP should count themselves lucky that the worst they've seen in reaction so far, is some sharp comments from Nenshi. Perhaps they'd have preferred to have been standing along the DF and the bypass routes due to the evacuation, speaking to motorists. I'd say Nenshi was the 'lesser of two evils' at this point. In fact, the sharp comments from Nenshi were probably the easiest they'd have dealt with. Factor in the road rage due to this morning's events and they'd have been freaking toast.

I have no love for CP asshats block arteries into and out of downtown during rush hour almost every day. That should be against the law or at the very least out of federal hands and into the hands of municipalities to allow or disallow after they present their case as to if the timing is necessary vs. Other needs of the city.

As a current CP employee I wouldn't doubt in the slightest that Hunter Harrison would make a comment like that.

I imagine many of my co-worker will be in for discipline statements in the coming weeks for not getting to our office downtown when the area was closed off, or had their homes destroyed or evacuated. It's the kind of company we work for after all.

As for the rush hour issue and such....the Railway was there long before most infrastructure I imagine a little foresight would have gone a long way. It's like people who build homes next to track and complain about the noise......surprise! Trains make noise!

I also live next to a one of the most used sidings in Alberta, the noise isn't that bad.

The Canadian Pacific is a gutted shell of what it once was even from when it moved here in 1996. I don't think many people hold a lot of regard for what is essentially a logistics company. Important, yes and the sharholders are happy but grand hotels, planes, ocean liners, telegraph and radio services, etc. are what people what people remember not intermodal freight. Any respect for being once Canadian Pacific ltd is probably a stretch at this point. Kinda like claiming Home Outfitters deserves our admiration for being owned by what became of the Hudson's Bay Co.

CP asshats? Way to lash out at people who are just doing their job because it might in inconvenience you for 10 minutes. Trains run when they run, nobody goes out of their way to block things off at rush hour. (or any other time) Trains are long and heavy and it takes them a while to get moving. I don't like getting stuck waiting for them either but it's something you just have to accept. The railway was there before the city was, and the trains have to go somewhere.

10 minutes would be annoying, but not terrible, but that's not what happens when a train crosses Glenmore at 4:30pm.

So basically, they had no need to be using the bridge in the first place.

Have you seen the two yards the bridge connects? My guess is they'll use the track they use to run cars to the CN yard on 50 Ave. Seems there's a connection to the other bridge. Not the easiest but with the amount if freight that moves between the two yards and beyond, not much other choice. People driving the 50 ave- Ogden ramp might be in for some long waits at that crossing.

The random, sand in the gitch, witchunt-salvo against CP does not look good on Nenshi but I guess he's afforded a little pissyness given the situation.

Good lord, that guy just basically presented and proved an open and shut negligence case in 13 words. That's amazing.

The CP ceo has been very successful by totally ignoring safety measures, pumping up the stock, and then getting rich to leave the company high and dry with a bunch of expensive repairs that need to be done. But that's ok he already made his money by the time stocks fall again. He's did it before and he's doing it again. Hope that scumbag burns in hell.

In 2003, Hunter Harrison announced that he wanted to fire a bunch of employees to increase shareholder value of CN.# Hunter Harrison and his new management team axed the jobs of safety supervisors, environmental compliance officers and other tenured management personnel.

CN's stock price rose after the mass firings so Hunter kept announcing more and more layoffs.# By 2004, the number of CN employees had declined to 18,500, even though the merged rail company#had become#one of the largest in the world and was#moving more freight and handling more contaminants than ever before.#Under The Hunter,#CN#abandoned unprofitable rail lines in northern and remote regions of Canada and ignored safety obligations, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries to workers. HUNTER SHRUGGED while CN left a legacy of environmental contamination throughout the Canadian wilderness ranging from#contamination of pristine aboriginal lands in Alberta to the abandonment of a PCB facility in North Bay, Ontario. Hunter Harrison demonstrated a villainous disregard for#environmental protection and safety obligations while he ran CN.

What exactly are you talking about?

CN stock has performed well during Harrison's tenure and in the years since he left. By all accounts CP has been an inefficient and under-performing railroad in recent years and he is taking steps to alter that course. It's very strange to me that you seem to have a personal hatred for the guy.

Looks like they got the cars off the bridge. Glad none of them ended up going for a swim, empty or full.

I just took a look on SPIN and CP owns a lot of the intersections that they block. That means that the province owns the road on either side of the tracks but not the intersection itself.

For example, on the east side from Glenmore east.
Glemnore is a public crossing, Barlow is and the next crossing is 84th st.
Originally, Canada only took a road crossing once a mile for a north/south road and every two miles for an east/west road. Since then, most of the roads in the province have been given to the province as a condition of subdivision. CP doesn't typically subdivide so the province has had no opportunity to take the crossings.
Expropriation is likely an option but I don't know why that is not done.

You can't expropriate lands from a railway. The Federal Act trumps the Surface Rights Act, a court won't even hear it. I had a legal opinion on exactly this issue a couple years back.

Cp is trying to close crossings south east of Calgary because the trains are over a mile. they can no longer stop a Train without interfering with crossing
