Icon36 Messier leaves the Rangers organization

Jesse Spector ‏@jessespector 27s Messier leaves NYR "to expand the game of hockey in the New York area by developing the Kingsbridge National Ice Center," per statement.

Hockey Central ‏@SNHockeyCentral 55s Mark Messier leaves Rangers, says it has nothing to do with AV being named coach.

The Oilers totally hired MacT prematurely.

So he goes from interviewing for the HC to leaving after he doesn't get the gig and it has nothing to do with the AV hire? Not buying that at all.

Is Feaster going to offer him a spot on the 4th line?

No, I'm sure he is next in line for the open President of Hockey ops position. He has all the qualities they look for.

Former player, executive in another organization...put him in charge of everything!

Katie Strang ‏@KatieStrangESPN 9m

#NYR Sather did concede, however, that being passed over for Rangers coaching job was part of Messier's decision to leave

Glad to see him taking on a role with that development, hopefully his presence helps keep up the enthusiasm around the project so as to avoid it being downsized or otherwise made to be less than it could be.

How many of you wouldn't do that? He's been putting his time in with that organization and gets passed over. Time to look elsewhere.

Sure, but if he wanted to coach, shouldn't he have been, you know, coaching? How is being Executive Without Portfolio a stepping stone to a head-coaching job?

How dare you question someone with so many cup rings. He is a winner and knows how to win

Pretty much exactly what Lanny did when he was passed over for the GM job in favour of Button. In retrospect, I doubt Lanny could have been worse.

It will never stop blowing my mind that Messier is second in points only to Gretzky.

Pretty sure I could get half those points playing with Gretzky even if I didn't know how to skate

How long until Kevin Lowe holds a press conference to say his knowledge of winning just increased?
