Damn, can't believe we missed out on a completely un-proven entity once again........this franchise is really in shambles.

Millions says on the Fan 960 that Shanahan listened to the Calgary offer as a courtesy to Murray Edwards. Said it was very doubtful Shanahan's family would leave New York.

A lot of whiners in this thread. If Shanahan so highly regarded why hasn't he been offered a position in another organization?

Why do we think Shanahan was even the right guy? He has no experience. There are a lot of great hockey minds in other organizations that I would bring in before him. Or a guy like Burke with a clear track record.

He may not have been. I don't think it's so much of "Shanahan is great" as "we can only go up from where we are at" sort of sentiment...

I think the worst case scenario is that nothing would change and the team would continue to flounder and best case would be vision and improvement but no matter the outcome he would add some credibility for this organization.
Look at the Lightning. They haven't really been lights out since Yzerman took over but you don't see anyone poking fun at them or referring to them as a joke of an organization anymore. Flames really need some credibility as I feel the organization has joined the Islanders and Oilers as a running joke across hockey circles.

Would've been a step in the right direction to see them hire someone from outside the Organization for a specific job that they didn't have to be promoted to later. A specific job of overseeing hockey operations from someone in the league or head office for 25 years, without a prior connection to the franchise is exactly what the organization needs.
Shanahan could've been a huge failure, but it would've at least been the correct way of going about it.
Edit: the other aspect is, now that he's said no, the problem they were hoping to rectify with his hiring still exists.

Who is to say that Shanny wasn't using this opportunity with the Flames as leverage with Bettman for a salary increase and staying on with his current NHL management duties.

Can't really blame him after Ken King said both he and Feaster will be keeping their positions

Not terribly surprising but I'm still disappointed. Was kind of hoping that if he got hired it would have POSSIBLY forced King to the periphery of hockey ops but oh well. I'd be cool with Burke if does end up here.

I'm actually really glad Shanahan turned it down. Deep down, I really want Burkie, so I'm holding out hope that eventually it is going to be him in charge of our hockey operations.

I think it's more disappointing that a job that should be enticing is being passed over by unproven candidates. As a club you want to get the best, or at least who you think will be the best in your front office, and if you can't do that you have a problem. I don't like that Ken King has more say than this job allegedly would have offered than a hockey professional, considering King has one eye on an arena, half the other eye on the Stamps/Roughnecks/Hitmen and the rest on Flames hockey ops despite having no experience in the game and having seen the only success in his tenure because Sutter had all say on the team.

Don't care about Shannahan, nothing to think he'd be good at the job. No loss as far as I'm concerned.

Yeh, Burke took a mess in Toronto that is even bigger than the flames, turned it into a team that could have won the east this year. Won a cup in Anaheim. Did a good job with canucks. Who wants that? DO. NOT. WANT. More Feaster please!!
