He had two seasons of around .5ppg very early on. There was a time when rookies who put up those kind of numbers were automatically getting the 3+ long term deals. The thinking was lock them down for 3mil a year now, to avoid paying them 6+ mil a year later on.
Didn't always work out that way...

Whereever he goes, it won't be to a bottom-feeder.
He could choose to lower his price tag to near zero to pick a team that gives him the best chance at a Cup.
Or, he could choose a market rate which probably puts a number of top teams out of contention but opens the door to mid-tier teams.
Take the "I Want To Win Another Cup" option as the most likely.

The hopes for a bottom-feeder like Calgary though is that he could have both:
Sign for the $$s and then move at the deadline to a contender (that otherwise couldn't have afforded him)

Yeah, they took a gamble (and lost) that the 3M per would end up being a bargain.

I think he'll go for option C: Go to a place that is near where he and his wife grew up.
I think if Montreal offers him anything half decent, he will be all over the chance to go home. He seems like a very community and family orientated kind of guy. I know he's stated in the past he'd rather stay in Tampa than play in Montreal, but that's not really a possibility anymore.

I think Enoch Root has the right of it... why sign for pennies on the dollar to play for a contending team when you can sign with a likely flush bottom dweller for many more dollars, play a bigger role, and end up on a contending team at the deadline when contending teams will have more Cap and when the dwellers can eat some of the money anyways. Win-Win-Win for everyone.
Or maybe he'll want to play close to home and neither money nor contention matters. Who knows (other then Vinny).

For a player like Vinny money is not going to be much of an issue. He probably does not want to go to a team just to have to move his familly again 6 months later.
As for "bigger role" i don't think Veterans see a bigger role on a losing team as a good thing. I said this in another post, we have Cammi and Tanguay who in Calgary would be almost guaranteed 1st line minutes. I don't think there are many other teams in the NHL that can give them as big of a role as they would get in Calgary. Even then they still want out.

Thank you, Jebus, for Lecavalier not being willing to leave the East - otherwise our wise men would be falling all over themselves to do "something"...

Not sure if this has been mentioned:

After he retires, he can live there another 55 years.
Maybe he does sign there - not a bad team and they're probably waiving a lot of dough - but the family thing is overrated.

I've had enough of keying on older players to hopefully get us in the middle of the pack. I'd much prefer to put up with a few down years, and gradually, mainly through the draft, assemble a completely new, highly talented group of young players that keep getting better and better with time.

Lecavalier says he's looking for a longer-term deal with another team. "I'm sad to leave but now I'm moving on."

Hmmm...doesn't sound like a 1 year deal is what Vinny wants.

If Tampa picks Barkov, not sure that Vinny would want to come back to Tampa to be the 3rd line center.

He could provide some leadership on what's going to be a very young team likely without Cammalleri and Tanguay.
I wouldn't mind him being a Flame come September.

I am all for this.. so he can sign with another team for $1M a season or something, right?

Apparently the Red Wings have sent their private jet down to Tampa Bay to meet with Lecavalier

Are they allowed to do that? I thought teams could not court players until June 29th?

According to Ren Lavoie of RDS they can:
Renaud Lavoie @RenLavoieRDS 1h All teams can talk to Vincent Lecavalier and his agent Kent Hughes. No contract can be signed before July 5th. #RDS
However it has been pointed out that Vinny is currently in Montreal

I'd like to see Vinny come in and keep Cammy til the deadline:
Cammalleri Lecavalier Stempniak
Baertschi Backlund Jones
Glenncross Stajan Jackman
Reinhart Knight McGrattan
Honestly I think that looks decent on paper. Bring Iggy back & slot him in there... [bag]

I could definitely see him ending up with Detroit, but do they really need another guy like this who's almost in his mid 30s signed long term? They've already got Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and Franzen signed long term but I suppose they'll be needing a good second line center once Filppula walks.
Montreal would be a good fit as far as the roster they currently have but would he really want to go there? They've wanted a big francophone center for years and he would be like the messiah to Hab fans but would he really want all that pressure and media scrutiny after the comforts of Tampa? Probably not.
Chicago isn't in the west but they could be great fit if he wants to sign a one year deal and chase the cup. In spite of winning the Cup the Hawks greatest need continues to be a strong #2 center behind Toews.
