[News] Chicago To Buyout Montador And Olesz

Not surprised those 2 are being bought out. A bit surprised that Blackhawks would not include a 2nd round pick to have another team buyout Olesz? He had one year left at over $4 million. If no team would help them out on an expiring contract next season, then i doubt we will see any trades for buyouts this year.

Surprised they didn't buy out Hossa. That contract will cost them dearly down the road. I imagine they are willing to sacrifice the future in hopes of winning another Cup in the next 2-3 years.

With a contract like Hossa's, would it almost be better to buy him out in the last few years of his contract, rather than letting him retire and have a larger cap recapture penalty?
Anyone have the insight on what the math would look like in those 2 scenarios?

From Chicago, rumors also have Bolland and Leddy being shopped around...With Hossa a trade, down the road, to a cap floor team would be a possibility, I suppose...I am not really sure how all those arcane numbers work....

I wouldn't mind offering Montador a two way contract. If his concussion problems are over, with his toughness, he could compete for a job here.

There is only a two year window for these compliance buyouts and the Hawks have used both of theirs.

Using the CapGeek buyout calculator, if the Hawks were to buyout Hossa in the summer of 2017 (when his salary drops to $1M/season), he would still have a cap hit of $4.6M for the final four seasons of his contract, then an additional $333,333 cap hit for the following four seasons.
Using the CapGeek Cap Benefit Recapture calculator, if Hossa were to retire in 2017 without being traded by Chicago, the cap penalty would be $4.275M for the final four seasons of his contract.
So, it's better Chicago for him to retire early than it is to buy him out, although both scenarios will suck for the Hawks.

They could also trade him to a cap floor team. That'd save a cap floor team 4+ mil a year for several years.

NMC can be bought out. Player has the right to choose to be bought out directly, or be placed on waivers and then bought out.

Players with NMCs can be bought out, but they have the choice as to whether or not they are placed on waivers beforehand. Lecavalier, Briere, and Bryz all had NMCs and all are being bought out (but none were placed on waivers this morning).

Yeah, EE, the Hawks will just trade Hossa's right to NYI or Nashville in a few years, who will be thrilled to have him count against the cap. The Hawks are Cup contenders for the foreseeable future, and Hossa is a key part of that.

Exactly.
It's a no brainer to keep Hossa right now. The team is doing so well right now, that you just need to worry about Hossa in a few years. Even then, there are a bunch of options.
