Yes - there may be individual buildings that will be not cleared and still without power. Check with your building manager. Some still have groundwater issues flooding lower levels and affecting ability to power up. But, this is a huge grid area affecting about 9000 people - energizing it will be a massive step forward.

Anyone think it would be a good idea to light the flame on the Calgary tower? Maybe it's too expensive or will divert city personnel from other areas in which they are needed needed, i'm not sure, but it sure would be inspiring to Calgarians during this time.
Maybe someone tweet @nenshi about it?

Shoppers did the same. I think they were 75 cents (plus deposit) for a dozen.

With all due respect, what happened in Katrina was on a completely different level. 80 percent of New Orleans was under water, up to 20 feet deep in places.

I'm going out tomorrow with a friend and my truck is full of non perishables, cleaning supplies, diapers, formula, baby food and a few toys and books. I haven't been able to do the dirty cleaning work but I'm glad I can help out by sorting donations.

It's not owned or controlled by the City. Aspen Properties is the owner - I expect they have more pressing concerns at a lot of their buildings right now. Hopefully soon though.

I'm half tempted to send our excavator down there, because it looks like what is needed is an army of dump trucks and back hoes. Equipment like that is going to ruin roads though, so I doubt the city would be ok with it.
|
It won't make much of a dent with the amount of crap downtown, but I will note that I'm coming downtown with my company on Saturday and we're bringing two 53ft semi's and a bunch of volunteers and we'll be helping people with large junk removal wherever we can, and Bigtime's street looks like a good place to start.

I hope this doesn't come across as stupid, or criticizing, because its an honest question. Where does all the money go that's being raised? Like the Red Cross...which is great and I have no doubt is a worthy cause, but what are they doing in the flood specifically? I would guess its all in High River?
Most of the other Red Cross things I can think of are things like earthquakes, hurricanes and tsunamis or other enormous calamities that seem to involve a lot more human suffering. That doesn't seem to be the case here (which isn't to suggest for a split second that people aren't going through tough times!). I guess those other events seem much more devastating than what we've seen in Calgary, if I can say that without being strung up.

I saw a few Red Cross trucks when I was driving around the Beltline yesterday. Not sure what they were doing, but they were here.
