Leafs / Lightning Proposed deal...
I am confused as to how this benefits the Leafs...
Not that I care about the leafs but curious none the less...

Aren't they stuck with a massive buyout cost for a draft pick ?

Wowzers, 30 million is steep even if the Leafs then got the chance to draft Drouin with the third overall pick. A guess that's just a drop in the bucket for the Leafs, but still a lot to pay.
Good on the NHL for not allowing it to go through. It makes complete sense to allow half of it to happen, but the player being bought out should not be allowed to sign with his former team for at least one year like that other thread is saying.

No way the Lightning would give them the 3rd pick. Toronto would have to be throwing significant assets in order to get that pick. It probably would've been a 2nd rounder.

$30,000,000 for a second round pick? No way.

There is another way to do it.
What if they traded Vinny to some team for a 7th round pick.
Then they trade their 3rd overall pick to get Vinny back but the other team keeps 2M of his cap hit.
Tampa ends up with the same result, Vinny at a lower cap hit. The other team gets the #3 pick for 8-10 million worth of Vinny's salary. The total cap hit stays the same so their isn't really cap circumvention. A team having trouble making the cap floor might consider this. Bet that would piss Bettman off.

Glad the NHL shot this down as teams should have to pay the price for giving out these ridiculous contracts so lessons can hopefully be learned going forward.

Not really, they would just fine them and take away their first round pick like they did with New Jersey. Remember, Kovalchuk's contract broke no concrete rule when they got punished.
And really, that's only 14M, half of what Toronto was willing to pay. And it would come with a cap hit for the team, so a team that can't pay players to get above the floor with actual players would pay Lecavalier to not play for them? Nope.

If I understand correctly, when you retain salary as part of a trade, you actually have to pay the dollars, not just the cap hit.

Wow, this means Vinny is in play. Flames could probably park his massive contract for 2 or 3 years while they rebuild, but that monster contract doesn't run out until 2020!
Seems my understanding from a compliance buyout standpoint is that if a player is traded and bought out by the new team, neither the original team nor the new team can re-sign him for a year?

I understand. They would be getting a potential star player for about 10M. If they are struggling to make the cap floor anyway then that money may not even be an issue.
Personally I hope Tampa is stuck with Vinny for giving him that dumb contract. Just throwing an idea out there.

If they're struggling to make the cap floor, they certainly don't have $10M to throw around on buying draft picks.

They have to spend the money anyway.

If a team can't pay their own players to reach the cap floor. Why would they pay Tampa's players to reach the cap floor? Not to mention they would still have to pay the 3rd overall...
They would be looking for some of these contracts that have higher cap hit than salary. Dead salary is the last thing they would be looking for.
Now a team that has a high budget but not a huge cap, like Calgary, would be the type of team that would consider it. Except it would be nixed just like this trade was and probably result in fines.

Would Toronto be penalized if they traded for Vinny, Played him for one year, then used a compliance buyout on him?

Probably not. But they couldn't really. 20M cap space, still need to sign Kadri, Bernier, 4 defenseman and a ton of depth players. Unless Lecavalier really bounced back it would look like a wasted year for Toronto to take him.

"Bounced back"? His contract is horrible, but he still a great 2nd line center. Also he was the best player on the team for the playoffs a year ago.

I'd be very curious to see what the proposed compensation was here.
A 2nd is way too low but I can't see the Lightning giving up Druin either. Maybe their 2014 first and this year's 2nd?
If the price was Druin, Feaster get in there. We have the cap space to carry Vinny for a while. Although I'm guessing that a part of the deal was that Vinny be bought out during the amnesty, to avoid any recapture going back to Tampa in the future.
