Take Pat with a grain of salt. He's done a commendable job filling up afternoon air space but he's not a wealth of hockey information as he's a hockey fan not a hockey guy. I don't know how many times I have had to shake my head when he comes out with his "I believe....." comments. If the guy had a media vote for the NHL awards he would be the only guy putting in a ballot for Martin Hanzal.
Yeah well as I said, when asked he admitted his knowledge of the draft eligible players was limited. His pick was based upon feedback he's received from discussions with various NHL scouts.

Pat Steinberg's pick for the Flames at 6 is ......................... Nichushkin.
While stating his personal knowledge of players is limited, this choice was based upon discussions with various team scouts.
Somewhat surprising, his sources cast some suspicions on Monahan's compete level which is the first I've heard of these concerns.
Not the first time I've heard that. Read similar things from fans of his team posting on HFBoards

I did read somewhere a few weeks ago (and it wasn't on HFBoards) that Monahan's focus can wander and he doesn't necessarily bring it every night.
From what I've read, Lindholm has a more relentless compete level. With Monahan, I think a lot of people read 'big' and 'two-way' and assume he has a lot of jam. But that's not always the case.
Of course, Monahan is still a kid, and he played on a bad team this season. I wouldn't consider it a red flag or anything.

If we take a goalie and two defensemen with our three firsts, if going to be incredibly disappointed. We need at least one centre ( whether at 6, 22, or 28) and one rw.

the same was said about Ryan Getzlaf

Crappy team and no line-mates. Name one 18 year old in history who wouldn't have had off nights?
Monahan's not a Flame yet - no need to get defensive on his behalf. And as I said, I wouldn't consider it a red flag. I just think anyone thinking Monahan is grittier or more of a competitor than Lindholm might be letting national bias affect their assessment.
And the same is true for Getzlaf - guy could be a beast if he showed up every night or even hit the weight room properly. Still a great player, but with his skill he should be a top 5 player in the league.
Not to derail, just has always bugged me about RG.

I agree, listening to the more analytic opinions like Pronman and you find more votes for Lindholm at pick #6 or better. I started out wanting Monahan based on size and nationality with the idea that all other attributes were roughly equal. It will be interesting to see how these two players develop in the future. I think they must be two of the most closely ranked players in the draft.
