Damn, I knew someone was going to beat me to the punch posting the bees gif!

First, a big shout out to Tiger, SebC, Frinkprof, Frinkprof's buddy from SSP, who's Internet name I didn't catch. I'm so grateful for all the help. Plus Bigtime, for the beers. I'm really happy with the progress, and actually feeling a bit liberated from the 80s Reno that's been there since I moved in.

Not sure how effective my first assault on the bees was, as the spray cans do a crappy job of spraying upward. But I've got a new plan for tomorrow morning. It involves pulling the drywall off, trapping them inside the vapour barrier, and poking holes in the barrier to spray.

Tomorrow, I will be going to help clean up flooded basements in Erlton and Mission. Got the gloves, mask, buckets, garbage bags, flashlight, bug spray, shovel in the truck already.

Question to those who have done it already: anything else that will be useful in there? Something you wish you had with you when you're doing it?

(P.S. I don't have a generator)

Hammer, crowbar/prybar, utility knife (the biggest three), tinsnips, rubber boots, headlamp/trouble light, generator, shop vac, squeegee, extension cords, change of clothes for the drive home...

Not everyone needs to have all of those, but they're all useful if you have them.

You probably won't need to bring food and drink, if it's anything like the places I've been.

Boots, a couple sets of gloves (get soaked pretty easily), change of clothes are necessity.

Add sledgehammer and shovel in there for tools. Carpet cutter (utility knife works fine too, just cut the backside of the carpet).

Plastic storage bins as well...to haul more smaller stuff out at a time. Bug spray if outside a lot.

Looks like someone with a truck and a utility trailer is in pretty high demand righ now too. That's a lot of stuff piled outside.

Basic tools are good as well to take stuff apart. Vice grips, Allen keys etc.

Trying to be a volunteer and help people out has been a lesson in being proactive and assertive.

On Monday afternoon my friend and I just walked around the Roxboro and Rideau area asking people if they need help. We keep getting turned away, which was frustrating because we knew they need help. Then we realized that it was our approach that all off. If you go up to people who are so utterly overwhelmed by everything and simply say “do you need some help?” they don’t even know where to begin or even how to properly answer that, and they brush you off.

Yesterday we took a different approach. A larger group of friends and I just went up to people and instead of asking them if the needed help we simply told them what we could do.

“Hi I’m here to help with any heavy lifting and removing any items in your basement, where can I start?”

“Hi we have tools and can do demolition work, should we start on the main floor of basement?”

We found these statements are much more powerful and effective then “Do you need help?” So if you’re down in the affected areas and wanting to lend a hand be specific and assertive in your statements.

Good advice. I actually was pretty lucky the past two days since I only got turned away several times, and those were from people who did seem to have plenty of help already. But offering what you can do should be a more effective way.
