I just got back from Sunnyside.
We just walked down the street until we found someone who needed help, got them all cleaned out and then moved onto the next home. I imagine with all the pumping that was still going on when I left, there will be many chances like this over the next few days.
Stopped and chatted with Bigtime for a bit as well and he pointed out there were some rather attractive models there helping out, so you single guys should probably spend some extra time there.
Really glad I got a chance to help out. Mrs Rathji was thinking I was a bit grumpy being stuck at home with so much to do. My old body is feeling the pain right now, that's for sure.

So, I'm going to put out a call for help. I've got a bunch of drywall to remove, and with a recently dislocated knee I'm not going at 100%. I had some great help from friends (and a few helpful strangers) today clearing out the basement, but most aren't available tomorrow. Ideally I'd like to spend tomorrow afternoon getting the drywall removed. Send me a PM if you can help. I'm in Sunnyside.
edit: got a couple offers, so until further notice I think I'm in good shape for help tomorrow!

Alright, so here's the Beltline plan.
We just had a meeting this evening with volunteers in our community eager to help.
We are chomping at the bit to get cleaning up in our community. However, the frustrating part is that the areas in our community that need cleaning up and repairs are in the still-in-effect evacuation zone with the power out.
Rather than sit around and wait (no one wanted to do that) we figured we would start by helping out other nearby flood-affected areas in the meantime, starting tomorrow.
We will be descending on Sunnyside tomorrow to help out the people there. We'll be meeting at 10AM at 5th Street and 7th Avenue NW.
Hopefully we can build some momentum so that when it comes time to clean up Beltline, we can hit it hard with lots of volunteer enthusiasm.
So basically, I and others are recruiting volunteers hard right now. I personally won't be at the 10 AM meet tomorrow, since I am back at work. I'm going to do evenings and into the weekend. The main contact tomorrow morning will be Owen Craig. We're also trying to round up some Beltline t-shirts for the group. If you want to help out with us (don't have to be from Beltline, just have to like helping people), please check out the Twitter and Facebook contacts below.
Eager to help you guys out in Sunnyside. See you tomorrow.

I felt so unclean I had to help out in Sunnyside today to purify myself.
By the way, anyone who's seen the mosquitos in Discovery Ridge knows that the term "parasite community" is wholy appropriate.

Been helping out at my buddy's down the street the better part of the last two days, back for another tomorrow.
It's a war zone down there....as you'd expect bordering the river.
If you can, park across Elbow and walk across....with all the bins getting dropped off and picked up, and trailer and large vehicles in and out, parking and room is at a premium.

If you go to help and drive down there, bring a change of clothes...I had to drive home in my underwear.
Also, a pry bar or breaker bar and hammer is a very handy piece of equipment for opening doors and cabinets because the water has swelled the wood so much.
And it was mentioned before...Bug spray.

It was great having you two in the community today!
Tomorrow I'm going to tackle the little bit of carpet, drywall, studs, and a bunch of wooden storage racks the original owners built in the basement.
I should be at the house by 10am at the latest, going to grab some supplies from work first. Come on down and smash stuff with me!
Just like today I'll be the white and green house on 4A street with a canoe paddle in the front.

Update:
I received a very touching phone call from one of the people we helped yesterday. It was a genuine thank you being expressed to furnaceface, sebC, aeneas and I for the clean up we helped with on Sunday. I missed the actual call but he left me a message that was large on gratitude. It made my day knowing we had made a positive impact for somebody who had been bit by this event.
Aeneas if you find yourself back down that hill tell them I say hi and that I appreciated the message.
Tomorrow: Bigtime I should be available to lend you a hand tomorrow. Need to make calls in morning to be sure. Maybe Facebook me your number and I can try and connect with you tomorrow for the smashaning.

Not sure if this should go here or the main flood thread.
McKenzie Towne wasn't directly affected by the floods but our community association has cancelled the activities in our centre gym to coordinate a donation drop-off. We are also looking for volunteers to help sort the donations.
It might be a good option for people who can't travel to the other side of the city but still want to help/satiate their survivors guilt.

If I were to show up at say 4:00 PM today would they still need volunteers for sorting?
Edit. I see they have time slots.

Will do. I was at thier house for 4 hours yesterday. Emptied the furniture from the basement. Guess how heavy that gigantic, sodden Persian carpet was?
Removed all the debris from another house across the street.
Springbank AAA hockey team players were there yesterday morning, 4-5 of them; they were a big help.
