^From what I saw down there - yeah, just show up. There's a little awning with some lawn chairs, food, drinks, and portable washrooms that people have set up on one of the corners (I think it was 5th Street and 7th Avenue NW). If you show up there and ask a couple people, I'm sure they would find something for you.

I'm happy to do the same with any groups of volunteers that need some food and drink. My availability is around 7pm this week; anywhere in the city. Send me a PM anytime this week.

I'm wanting to help.
I've checked yychelps, Calgary Clean Up and a few other pages dedicated to help but most just want an email address. I've left my contact info with all but want to help now.
I have no special equipment or skills. I have no rubber boots but am willing to go back to my childhood days and wrap my feed in bread bags before popping on my kicks. I have a van, 2 hands, could use a good workout and am willing to do whatever physical work is needed.
If Aeneas or anyone wants to give me a location in Discovery Ridge, I would love to help.
Or that Lansdowne Ave and 4a St place.....do you just show up? I don't want to get in the way, but do want to help.
I am free all afternoon/evening tomorrow and then any time of any day for the rest of the week.
Please PM me if you need help or can give me some pointers of where to go.

Just show up. There will be activity everywhere, and just ask them if they need a hand. I was relegated to picking up trash and debris and telling really bad jokes.

My plan is to drive down from Edmonton on Friday (pending work approval) and volunteer myself out from 8am-8pm. Have no special skills, no tools, but I'd love to help. Anyone have a use for me?

Heading into Discovery Ridge after around 2pm or so tomorrow. If anyone wants to specifically direct me, hit me with a PM. Otherwise, I'll just pop by and see what's what.

I was volunteered by my father to work elsewhere today again, so I am not going to be available to join the rest of the CPers in Sunnyside or Discovery Ridge. Stay safe everyone.

I have my kids today so I dont know if I will be much help.
I may be more of a make food guy today.
I know of a house for sure where help is needed.
Today it is pure cleanup, not so much tear out/carry out.
Wet dry vacuuming sweeping mopping, power washing. If that is your fancy, i will PM you.

I said it in the flood watch thread - I'd like to volunteer some time but I won't be able to for a couple of days for sure. The kid ended up back on an IV last night (they pulled it Friday night) and they're talking bone scan so I have to wait to hear on that. As soon as I have her stuff all squared away, I'm able to help - so I'll check back in a day or so.

So as I figured, our office is open and it's business as usual. As I mentioned before, I'd love to help out. I don't have a truck or any special tools but I am willing to do whatever. I am usually off work around 3:30 and can get myself anywhere needed. Shoot me a PM if you'd like an extra set of hands.

I'm planning to go around this afternoon to see if anyone needs help. I'm off work at 3:30pm as well. Maybe a couple of us CPers want to get together and then wander the streets to see if we can hep out anywhere?

I'm down in Riverbend and off work and willing to help. I've got no tools, but I have boots and a willingness to work until I drop. PM me if you need a hand.

Being an IT project manager isn't that conducive to ripping out basements and hauling stuff. My back is stiff and sore today, but it feels really good because I know I did something.
We were in 4 houses in Discovery who needed help, one of them especially. Lots of neighbourly spirit going on and people just helping each other. Huge props to Surferguy who had much needed construction advice which he handed out to the homeowners. They looked overwhelmed at times but you helped them make decisions on what needed to be done.
Aeneas, tell your neighbours the pleasure was ours and we'll be back if they need us again.

Just got a note from Bigtime:
Hi Surferguy,
Could you post on CP that I could use help emptying the basement with anyone that has hip waders? Tell them I'm 4A street with a canoe paddle in front of the house.
Thanks,
Bigtime

I don't know if traffic is still totally F'd, so it might be a good idea to organize a crew to come in together to reduce congestion. I was moving pumps and equipment through Lower Elbow on the weekend, and because there was only one way in it was a pain in the arse.
Shovels and capable people are the basics, and they are needed across the flooded areas. All the basements in the area need to be pumped, and all the belongings have to be taken out to be dried or thrown out. If you walk into one of the areas and ask the first person you see I guarantee they will either need your help or send you to someone that does.

Is anyone looking for a 2" electric submersible pump for their basement? Or is anyone here actively going around and pumping basements for CP members? I work for a company that has some pumps and entertaining the idea of buying one myself and lending it to someone for free who I know will use it and not make money from it. Please PM me!

Hey all - Seeing lots of discussion about Beltline and Discovery, but don't forget about Bowness if you just want to show up and help. We went through there yesterday (friends of friends live in the area) and they are devastated as well. Like other areas, I'm sure they'd love a helping hand too.
And if I missed reference to Bowness previously, my bad!

Some of this might seem obvious but for people that are planning to show up in an affected community and help, here are some suggestions based on yesterday's experience:
-wear rubber boots, clothes that can get covered in mud and waterproof gloves
-flashlights, headlamps and trouble lights are all useful in dark basements that have no power
-generators, pumps, shop vacs, extension cords and hoses were all put to use
-basic tools like screwdrivers, wrenches and hammers are good to have
-beer and food is always appreciated
-put on bug spray if you think you'll be outside

Just want to take a moment and say how truly proud I am to be a Calgarian. This last week has truly shown what this city is about. Everything from the thousands of people opening their homes for displaced residents, to the countless amount of first responders who worked day and night to keep people safe, this city has come together in an amazing way. I've seen thousands of volunteers helping out strangers who have lost everything and offering their time to clean and make our city even better then it was before. Our Mayor has been at the forefront of the crisis has done an impeccable job leading our city throughout this difficult time. I hate to say it but a special thanks to our neighbors to the north.. even though you've had 3 first overall picks and your hockey team still manages to suck, thanks for all the support during this difficult time. PM me if anyone needs help.. Come hell or high water... Calgary 2013.
