I work in the Highfield Industrial area and the owner lives in Edmonton and the GM called me today for me to contact my staff not to come in to the shop until Tues.
No one will be docked pay.

Anyone have any info/photos of St. Mary's High School? I graduated from there 10 years ago so my memory is a bit hazy, but I remember a large portion of the school being not far above river level.

I don't want to sound like a dick, but you are aware that life must go on, right? At some point, it will be business as usual. Companies aren't going to just turn off the lights and take a week off. This flood sucks, but the world is still turning. No need to make it worse by shutting down needlessly.
And I'm pretty sure that most employers are going to be sympathetic to people who were directly affected by this flood. If your wardrobe and razor is currently submerged, you're probably allowed to take a few days off. If you live in Bridlewood, and the extent of your inconvenience is having to transfer from the train to a bus, then you should probably get your ass to work and cover for the people that are at home pumping watter out of their houses.
|
There are no busses to take.
Quote:
Some downtown bus and Access Calgary routes will operate to the following boundaries surrounding the downtown.
From the north - 16 Avenue N
From the west - 14 Street SW
From the east – Deerfoot Trail
From the south – Glenmore Trail (some routes will go to 11 Avenue S)
Please stay safe and allow extra time for your travel.
|
I think we'll be more productive working from home then spending the day on improvised transit routes. Leave the space for those who need to get downtown.

My understanding is that it probably wont open again until the fall. It looked like the water level was at or above halfway up the main level (5 ft?). It was basically a large swimming pool.

The entire bottom floor is flooded to the ceiling. There were some photos in this thread, but I can't find them.

I feel bad for all the foreign workers that work in the various fast food places downtown. Losing a week of work can be tough if you're a Canadian contact worker sending money home each month. Curious if Tim Hortons etc put them in another location for a week or actual paid them for the missed time.

A friend of mine who has some connection to that school said she was told the damage is "devastatingly catastrophic".

That said, I'm a salaried employee and will be collecting my pay but perhaps being less efficient / productive working from home. There will likely be some people that are not being paid if they can't work. Other places will suffer loss of income (zoo, restaurants, stampede, etc). A boom for the trades and local suppliers of materials but no one else?

Natural disasters, the follow up, can generally be a boom to the economy.
I was out for a ten mile run this am over country roads and saw the bridge destruction at Black Diamond. I use that bridge all the time. Amazing sight. And the bridge off the Turner Valley Golf Course also destroyed.
Sad sights.
Our Ag Society Board met yesterday morning and our forty foot hole in the entrance of the Millarville Racetrack will be repaired in the next few days. We will be open for the Millarville Farmers Market next weekend.
Still a huge amount of water flowing over Higheay 22 and Highway 549 intersection. Drove over it today.

I think the Stampede should go on if at all possible. The tourism revenues generated by the Stampede go a long way to repair the damages.

Fyi- Graham Delaet, the Saskatchewan native that is donating $1000 per birdie and $2500 for eagle to the Alberta flood relief efforts, has a legitimate chance of winning the Traveler's Championship. 1 off the lead with 4 to play.

so far has 16 birdie's through the tourney, and PGA tour Canada, ATB Financial, and L. David Dube all matching, hoping he can win as this was a great gesture

Medicine Hat has now evacuated 10,000 people. Approximately 1/6 of the city's population. All 3 bridges will be closed by this evening, effectively cutting the city in half.
The city has set up temporary health and police stations on the north side of the river, and the Canadian Forces have provided 3 helicopters and 320 soldiers.
Both the Medicine Hat Arena and Athletic Field have been flooded. More info below.

I don't know if this a photo shop posted on fb recently, I think it is authentic. Remarkable how quickly the water has receded in a day.
