Default Flood 2013: Going To Work Thread

Who has to go to work Monday?

Obviously downtown is closed and schools are closed.
Is it expected that parents stay home? Is it expected that evacuated people not go to work? How can you work if you have no house? Are bosses going to lenient or be heartless?

I figure most employers will be understanding, mine already emailed and said to work from home or not at all if we're in the flood zone or helping with clean up.

This week will be a good indication of the character of your managers and employer.

I have been pretty much working all weekend, trying to fill some holes in our fan out list that we didn't realize was an issue - ie not everyone had access to a up to date physical copy.

I know for us, anyone impacted by the flood needs to contact "HR to access the appropriate personal days", which is pretty much code for you get as much time as you need to deal with your stuff.

I am assuming I wont be working downtown tomorrow, but I have a client in the SE than I am hoping to be at all for a good chunk of the day.

I assume most employers will be very accommodating. I'm giving my guys the option of working or not and leaving it up to them to decide what's best for them. I sent everyone home early on Friday (up here in the NW we didn't realize how bad things were south of the Bow until after people had arrived for their shifts). So far most guys have wanted to come in and have just needed some extra flexibility with their shifts.

For downtown stuff, hopefully most companies can arrange for their people to work from home and maybe have a skeleton crew actually come down town in the early days. It's definitely important to not clog things up down there so the clean up and repairs can be made as quickly as possible, but it's also important to get businesses up and running to minimize the damage to individual companies and the economy in this province overall.

I have faith that almost everyone will use common sense and things will be back to normal or at least functional as soon as possible.

My office is out of the downtown core. With the transit service in shambles on Friday, I stayed home. I think I will be in on Monday though.

I imagine most companies will be very accommodating.

Our company emailed us to not come in and work from home until further notice. I'm glad our company puts its employees before money even though the CEO's house is completely flooded on Sifton. Love this company that is why I have been a devoted employee for 14 years. Manager just called me to confirm that I am okay... He forgot i am suppose to fly to San Francisco tomorrow. Company is good from the top down.

I'm lucky in that my home is not near any problems area, and my route to work (Macleod, Southland, Blackfoot) has no issues.
I suspect our office will be down at least 50% which means it will be a chance to actually get some real work done.

I don't work downtown but took Friday off due to uncertainty of being evacuated and being very close to evacuated areas and the potential for road closures making it difficult to get home at the end of the day. I think a lot of people from our company made it into work that day though.

As things progressed Friday, my boss phoned me to make sure I was okay and offered up a room in his house for me if I got evacuated or power went out. Very nice.

I'll go into work Monday though. Many of our projects will be either directly or indirectly impacted by the flooding though, so it might be a bit chaotic getting back into things. Still, there's stuff to work on and it will restore some normalcy. Another way of saying that is that I'm a workaholic and I need my fix.

All of the companies in downtown/Beltline should be actively encouraging their employees to stay home though. No transit, a road network and parking facilities in disarray, power still off in many areas and residents trying to return to the area is a bad mix for trying to get employees into work.

I didn't see this thread, so this was posted in the other one:

My office a couple blocks west of Husky just sent an email saying business as usual if you can make it to the office. Considering the LRT is still down as are bunch of major roads, I'm not really sure I agree with their assessment here.

Our building downtown wasn't affected at all apparently (corner of 7th ave, 6th st), didn't even lose power. Regardless the CEO emailed us informing that attendance on Monday is voluntary and only "essential personnel" should attempt to make it downtown

So essentially I get to sit at home in my underwear until further notice, occasionally logging on remotely to make sure things don't blow up. That's my silver lining

My status of going to work will depend whether or not my building will have power restored. I asked in the Flood thread but didn't receive a respond. Does anyone have a link to the current power outage zones in downtown?

I am apparently 'essential' and am in the re-entry zone DT, so I am going.

My parkade is closed - does anyone know if street parking is allowed in the reentry zones?

That being said, I am in what is considered the beltline area and I do have power.

We've been told to stay home for sure on Monday and will be advised about the rest of the week on a day to day basis. I've heard from IT that it's likely we won't be back until Wednesday-ish. (I"m in the BP building).

I live basically by Crowfoot in the NW and work on 116th ave SE ... Anyone know if Glenmore is open all the way from Crowchild to Sheppard? Or what the best route may be? I usually cut through DT and go up Ogden to avoid traffic ... Sounds like it would be longer but it's usually much faster, but with all the flooding by stampede and I believe the bonnybrook bridge being closed that's going to be a no go.

We've been told it's business as usual and to come in.

Good resource for visually seeing what is open and closed can be found here:
http://google.org/crisismap/2013-alberta-floods

It gets updated every couple of hours as information changes.

I was told business as usual Monday. We are beltline right by mec. I will probably have to walk in from past 14th st though. Our office was 1 block off of the evacuation zone
