Pretty sure it is not allowed in the CBA but Ren Lavoie is reporting cash is going back to the Kings?
Renaud Lavoie @RenLavoieRDS 10m In the Bernier trade, there are also reports on money going back to LA from what I've heard. #RDS
edit: not cash but cap hit
Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger 18s Money back to LA in Bernier deal around $500K.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie 12s
TOR did take back money (cap hit applied against TOR) in Bernier deal, in the $500,000 range.

That's what you get Vancouver for pricing Bobby Lou too high! Love the deal for that alone.

How is that a fair comparison? The trade value of a potential #1 goalie compared to the return for a fwd or D that's a bust?

Why wouldn't the Leafs focus on more pressing need like defence & centre when it's clear that Bozak who was their previous first line centre is not coming back? Reimer looked really good towards the end of last year and in the playoffs so why would they pretty much tell him that wasn't good enough?

Interestingly, virtually every Leafs fan on my Twitter feed is incensed by this deal. They don't see Bernier as being any better than Reimer. Not happy about both the cost of acquisition and the contract Bernier is going to expect.

There's nothing statistically to say he is better.
It could mean that Reimer will be better rested though.

I think its kind of an overpayment, Bernier has not shown he can be a #1 goalie in the NHL yet

Indeed. But the dichotomy between our reaction and theirs is interesting.
Are they overrating Reimer and underrating Bernier, or are we underrating Reimer and overrating Bernier, or some combination of both?
Bernier and Reimer both playing extremely well would be a good problem for Toronto to have, but at the same time, creates goalie controversy. It could mean Reimer comes available next offseason.

That's because Leaf fans tend to be homers who overrate their players. In six months they'll be calling for Bernier to make the Olympic team.

The last time that Nonis traded a second round pick for a goaltender who was drafted higher and was stuck behind a better goaltender (Ryan Miller) he got 4 games of Mika Noronen and 170 minutes of awe inspiring action. The best part is that one of the players drafted right after was Milan Lucic and while there is no guarantee that the Canucks would have selected him, by throwing away a second round pick, Nonis guaranteed that the Canucks didn't select him.

The Flames should target Reimer.

Nonis was also the active player bringing lulongo to csnucks even though burke was still there I believe. Def knows how to get good value dealing for goalies.

The Flames should never ever trade with Toronto ever again. Ever.

Most teams are moving toward the 1A/1B model, splitting time between two relatively equivalent goalies before riding whoever gets hot into the playoffs. Bernier and Reimer will make for a formidable, young such tandem. Huge upgrade from Reimer/Scrivens, without giving up much of consequence--Fratton is a decent piece, but replaceable. Pick is not from this year's deep draft. Win for the Leafs.

I hate this deal because the Leafs have great goaltending now. Bernier and Reimer are a great tandem. I wonder how Reimer feels though? I don't understand the deal totally because I thought he clearly showed he was a #1 goaltender and he helped them nearly beat the Bruins. Jeez.
Not to be a backseat GM but if this was the price tag why weren't we involved? Or maybe we were who knows.

I think the Flames believe they are set for goaltending. Two unknown goalies are going to get their shot during year one of a rebuild. Personally I am very intrigued by Berra firstly and Ramo secondly.
My gut feeling tells me there's something there in Berra and we will all be happy.
