Too many really good looking backups have failed to translate that success into success as a starter for the price to be really high, which is why I wasn't surprised that the Flyers weren't willing to part with Couturier, but that's still a lower price than I expected.

Toronto just may have made THE deal to keep the franchise going strong.

Does it really matter if Bernier becomes a franchise goaltender considering the low price the leafs gave up?

At worst he is a big upgrade on Scrivens. They pretty much gave up a 2nd round pick in 2014 or 2015. Not hard to imagine that it will not be a low (30-40) pick.

Bernier being a RFA likely meant LA would prefer to deal him before July 5th to avoid having to deal with potential offer sheets.

I agree about the rest, but Frattin is a 25 year old former college player who just turned pro 3 years ago and has twice as many NHL games as AHL games. Actually has ok production as well.

I'd hardly call him a career minor leaguer.

I really hope not.

Don't get me wrong, the deal was definitely in the Leaf's favour because there is not a whole lot to lose for them but some people are surprised at the return because they expected it to be way more. He's a solid backup and an unproven starter. Like you said, at worst he is an upgrade to their backup position and at best, he's the next Kiprusoff (I believe we gave up a 2nd for him as well)

Bernier hasn't proven in any way he's an upgrade on Reimer, could turn out to be another Montoya etc.

impossible to judge deal at this point, at this point it's a quality top 9 forward, 2nd round pick for an unproven starter

At that price i would have loved Bernier on the flames. Granted i doubt LA would have traded him to Calgary because they are now in the same division.

Montoya never showed he was good though.

If anything it solidifies the goaltending really well in Toronto. Reimer and Bernier are going to have to battle it out for number one duties for season after next.

I have seen him play quite a bit and he is nothing special. He has good talent but he takes way too many games off. Actually, at best I see him being Rene Bourque. He is also a RW which does not fit what LA needs, they need help on LW. I think Frattin will be a servicable 3rd/4th liner, something the Kings could have easily got through their own system or UFA.

We're in no position to be giving up 2nd round picks (likely 31st overall next year) and young roster players/prospects for a goalie that has yet to play 82 games ever.

We all know if Feaster was making the trade, the 22nd pick would be going to LA. Vast overpayment.

I disagree. Watch the two play and Bernier is much better skill wise than Reimer. The Kings would not have finished as high as they did without Bernier, he was excellent. I have no doubt he will be a very good #1 goalie.

It wasn't that long ago, that many thought the Leafs got Vesa Toskala for a pretty low price. Goaltenders can look great one place, and awful the next. Bernier does have a pretty solid pedigree, but he has never been a starter in the NHL. For the Kings....Scrivens likely can replace what Bernier was doing or would do in a full season with a healthy Jonathan Quick...remember that Quick was still recovering from back issues this season, and Frattin can come in and play in their every day lineup for a reasonable price.

Former 1st round pick, 6 or 7 years of development time traded for a 2nd rounder plus spare parts.

Feaster, take notice if you are tempted to draft Fucale or any goalie in the 1st round

Hey, you never know. In a couple years, maybe Scrivens will be putting up a .941 sv% playing for the kings in the SCF while Bernier plays in Italy.
