Threads like this really make me wonder about the effect sports and politics have on people. On the one hand - this massive outflow of compassion, charity and good will from people in times of need. On the other - all the vile, cynicism and sarcasm from these same people in the political and hockey threads. Are politics and professional sports makes us worse than we really are or do they simply wake up the bad in us?

Not directed at anyone in particular, just a philosophical observation.

I can help too. My white collar hands could use a callous or two.

Helping individual neighbours and CPers would be more important but I was thinking earlier it would be interesting to get a big CP group together and see if The Stampede wanted volunteers to help clean up the dome. The connection between CP and the dome is pretty obvious. It would also help get The Stampede back on track quickly. It would be an interesting story in my mind.

My white collar hands could use a callous as well. Saw this under publicized ad that I'll be assisting with in ten minutes.

<ninja edit> Confirmed that many of the evacuation centres in Calgary are fully stocked with supplies.

Best source of news always seems to be found on CP.

I just sent a tweet to @nhlflames and @calgarypuck letting the flames know that a Calgary Puck team is on standby to help clean the dome if they need assistance #cleanthedome

I can also be available to help out evenings/weekends. My work was unaffected so I will be expected to be there, but outside those times I would love to help out!

What people can do if they want to help is simply drive to an impacted area and see what people need. I bet for the next two weeks you will find home owners who need help with moving pumps, Cleaning up, Ripping out drywall or whatever.

Many people know they will need help, But don't know when. As water resides they can get to work on their place. Depending on the house that can be anytime between now and next week.

Amazing compassion that's been shown in this thread and around Calgary. I tip my hat to all of you.

If I was even remotely close I'd come help out in person, but it's a bit of a commute.

I think it will still be a few days until we really know what is going to be needed. However, I am guessing hauling away water logged items, carpet, drywall etc to the dump is going to be the big one. I am still trying to contact Dion, his phone is just ringing busy, as it appears to be a landline. I am guessing when this is said and done, he is going to need some serious assistance.

Did Dion ever reply to any PM's? Really hope he's alright.

Yeah to the guys who need help, please don't be afraid to ask in this thread. There are a lot of us relatively unaffected by all that has happened and would love to assuage our survivor guilt by helping you get back on your feet. You'd actually be doing us as much of a favour as we would be doing you one.

Good thread, pylon.

I've done a lot of demo, as well as moving furniture, so I will be interested in helping clearing out people's basements. I'm not really interested in helping at the dome or stampede grounds as they will get their help. Regular people are more screwed, so I'd rather help them.

Question: lots of my neighbours in sunnyside are busy pumping out their basements, and then reporting that the water's coming back in (apparently because most of our flooding is from the storm sewer system). All the water that's being pumped out is just going back into the storm drains and back into people's basements. A neighbour called 311 and they were told basically the same thing: that there's no point in pumping until the water levels are lower. And since the evacuation order hasn't been lifted, we aren't going to be staying around over night to keep pumping it out.

With 18 inches in our basement, we're resigned to the fact that we're going to be replacing drywall and carpets and such anyway. Obviously there's a threat of mold if there's too much moisture in the house. I'm torn between the city's official advice on the matter, vs. the peer pressure of what everyone else in the neighbourhood is doing. Though I'm leaning toward not actually pumping until the water levels go down.

Anyone have any advice on this?

edit: oops, meant to post this in the Flood Watch thread, but now I'm not sure if this thread should just be for requests/offers of help, but also for cleanup advice. So I'm going to leave it here for now.

There is absolutely no point in pumping at this point.
