Before this gets dragged down deeper into animosity, I did PM Jammies. I admitted that I most certainly was venting from the heart rather than stepping back and discussing from my head. I didn't create the thread as a "trap" as suggested, but if I had been thinking I guess I would have seen that as the inevitable outcome. Re-reading my first post, I probably should have waited until today to create this thread since I was not in the right frame of mind to discuss on an even keel. My responses were honest, but sometimes not the most constructive.

Food & diet is really hard to change.
I have the opposite problem. I can't gain weight, been made fun of my whole life for it. A few months ago I started Doug some basic workouts to try and build some muscle. About a week ago I started adding weight gain protien into my diet.
I'm stronger than I ever was (still a wimp mind you) my body is in decent shape, but I'm still skinny and my weight is in the same range it's always been.
I'm not trying to say that I have it worse or just as bad as someone with obesity. I don't think that, but I can understand, at least on some level, the frustrations with weight and changing your diet.
I agree with making obesity a medical condition, perhaps more avenues and options will open up to the average joe who is battling with their body.

Why would you bother with PMing him?
You don't owe him an explanation or anything.
I think some of his posts are some of the funniest on here but his classic drop in to belittle others that show a passion in threads "wears a little thin".

Bit late to answer this, but if people over eat, food probably makes them feel good. The addiction isn't similar to what a drug addiction is, but it is still very similar.

FYI - As I was searching Google for something else this morning, I bumped into this:
http://www.slate.com/articles/double..._t_admire.html
Quote:
every shred of evidence available to medical science indicates that it’s nearly impossible to take off large amounts of weight and keep it off. That was largely the point of Tara Parker-Pope’s New York Times Magazine article from earlier this year, from which the main takeaway was that even a more than typically well-informed healthy eater and marathoner like Parker-Pope is 60 pounds overweight. And her experience is not unusual. Of the statistically minuscule number of people who ever manage to take off serious poundage in the first place, an even tinier number manage to keep it off in the long term. The article describes the complexity of metabolic changes that occur in dieting obese patients that seem to effectively convince their bodies that they are perpetually starving and should conserve every calorie consumed and burn fewer calories than most people would easily shed through normal activity or exercise. “A sobering reality,” writes Parker-Pope, “[is that] once we become fat, most of us, despite our best efforts, will remain fat.” Parker-Pope personalizes that point through the story of Janice Bridge, one of the statistically small number of people qualified to join the National Weight Loss Registry, which tracks 10,000 people who have permanently lost a lot of weight. Bridge weighs her lettuce, eats 500 fewer calories per day than every means of medical measurement says she should be able to eat, and burns off another 500 calories in exercise. Medically speaking, she is nearly starving to death. In reality, she’s maintaining at a number that indicates that she is still overweight.

Good to see someone handling criticism constructively instead of trying to turn it into a flamewar. That can be a rare thing on the internet.

I have the skinny problem too. I'm six feet tall and wear jeans that are a 28 waist. Twice now in my life I have force-fed myself insane amounts of food for months at a time, like eating a chicken breast with every meal including breakfast as well as pounding back rice and salads like crazy. All that happens is I feel sick and poop a lot. I can seriously eat whatever I want and never gain a pound.

I'm 6'2 and in the exact same boat (same jeans too, depending on the brand between 28 & 30).
Every few years I go through the desire to try and put a few pounds on. Right now I'm in the, let's see if I can fill out for the wedding mode. So far, nothing, however I have switched to having a few protein shakes throughout the day rather than 5 scoops of Mutant Mass mixed with water in one sitting (I seriously don't know how I didn't puke).
I've also started using the Runstastic exercise apps. While I don't notice change in my weight or size, I do notice more definition in my body. Still skinny as fack but at least now it's skinny as fack with some definition.
I was told my metabolism would slow down once I hit college, then once I graduated college, then when I hit 30...
Again I don't think being skinny is worse or even on bar with being over weight, but people do tend to scoff at a skinny person's weight problem, or assume that we have a disease, or don't eat, or should eat a cheese burger or two. Back in my retail days I once had a lady walk up to me and say "My God you're skinny!!!!" I just stared at her blankly, I couldn't believe what I just heard. Imagine walking up to someone working in a store and saying "My God you're fat!!!"
So yes, again, I agree that obesity should be a disease. If you are not able to control you're weight to be a healthy functioning human being, you have a disease and should be treated for such.

I turn 30 this year. But I'm not counting on anything.

This is exactly what I have done on several occasions when overweight people have commented on me being skinny. The look on their face is priceless.

Meant to say that the addiction part isn't similar to how someone becomes addicted to heroine or crack, but instead they become addicted to the idea of using food to find comfort and to make them feel better.

Tell me about it.
However, even knowing the odds are stacked against me, I'm absolutely DETERMINED to keep the weight off. As incredibly hellish as the last 3 years have been, particularly this last one, they have been the 3 best years of my life and I'm not about to let that slip away.
As an exercise bulimic, I would run 3 hours a day and then do another hour on the exercise bike. But what that means is that I PHYSICALLY COULD run for 3 hours a day and do another hour on the bike!! I'm just amazed at that. So even though it was crazy sh*t I was doing, it was a far better life than the depression I suffered when I was 340 pounds.
The article was meant as a counter-point to those that seem to suggest that the reason obese people are not at a healthy weight is simply because they are lazy. That is the point of view of someone that has never had to lose a significant amount of weight. It is extremely hard to lose the weight. It's even harder to keep it off.

I don't know much about Runtastic, but I get the impression that it must involve a lot of cardio. If you are trying to gain weight, I would drop that and focus on lifting weights (primarily compound exercises like squats, dead lifts, bench press, etc.)

Some of you must really hate me for having to make a 2000+ calorie weight gain shake and still barely put on weight.
That metabolism.
